You've gotta see this...

I wasn't sure where to post this thread, but I'll try here. Moderators, feel free to move this.

I got this through an email. Some prince somewhere had Audi build him a special A8. Silver paint was too boring for him, so he had the body made out of SILVER!!! :shocked

Real Silver!

Talk about reflectivity!! I wonder how his personal detailer will keep it from being tarnished! haha...

I am not expert in metal working but I don't believe you can get true silver on a car in that fashion. Rather that is a special paint process which gives the illusion of chrome, not silver.

BMW did the same thing to a car for the SEMA show last year and I believe there are pics of it on Autopia also. Do a goggle search for "Chrome BMW" and it will come up plus an article about how they did it.

Personally I think it looks ghey!

Well, being an A8, the body is all aluminum, so my guess it's just polished aluminum, or it could be the same paint they used on the BMW, but it's not real silver

Dang thats pretty tight. Drive that on a sunny day and see, if you can attract cops :grinno:

The email it came in stated the body panels WERE silver. However, I was also suspicious. Polished aluminum sounds more realistic, like what Jaguar did to show off the new XJ.

But, then again, it is some filthy rich foreign prince, and if he wanted a silver car, I'm sure someone could accomodate him! No matter how unreasonable that sounds!

I saw this posted on an auto forum like Jalopnik.com a while back. I believe it said the paint was stripped and the metal polished. Some parts were plastic and they used a specially formulated paint to match them to the polished metal surfaces.

Nah,

Since the plastic bits and sensor covers have the exact same sheen and appearance, I say it's paint. It certainly isn't silver metal.

yeah, I cannot see it as real silver.. When I first saw it, I thought maybe he chrome plated it.. Don't see why that wouldn't work, just very expensive.. Lots of people chrome plate their firearms, which IMHO has smaller tolerances.

Anthony, please don't lay that abomination on BMW!:grinno:

That car was L O A D E D with orange peel and just looked horrible in person. Swirled too!

friggen guys making sooo much money from our gas pumps can afford to silver leaf or "silver body?" their cars

Here's the link to MTM who apparently actually produced the car's finish. What they state is:

"In Dubai the mtm Audi A8 polished was the eye-catcher. The car was analysed and in many studies the enamel varnish of the aluminium car body was removed. Furthermore the car was cleaned. After that, the car body was poslihed with fine abrasive paper as well as special polishes to high gloss. The blank dress must not have any defects, because of the fact that retouching was not possible. Finaly the car was protected with special clear varnish against enivornmental impacts.

Because of the fact that it is impossible to polish plastic parts like front- and rearspoiler, mirror house, side sillboard or also fuel tank cap, they were enameled in a complex way to get a chrom effect. Finaly they were polished with clear varnish."

I just did a quick Google of the name on the license plate in the photos. They apparently did some engine and body effects work too. And there are a few more pics.
