Yesterday's Detail - 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V, Part I...and a bonus!

Yesterday's detail was day 1 of a two day detail. A client of mine referred me to his friend, who threw me a bone by asking me to detail his 1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V.

A few things that made this detail a huge challenge. First, I fractured a bone in my lower leg playing indoor soccer a couple of week's ago, so I have been in a leg immobilizer. This makes detailing slow and tedious. Second, the car was heaviliy oxidized. Third, he asked that I remove the pinstripes off of the car. This literally broke down my entire 3M pinstripe removal wheel...just one side of the car! And last....this thing is like an aircraft carrier...longest car I have done to date!!!

Process

-Washed wheels using CG wheel cleaner

-Tires/wheel wells washed using DK degreaser

-Car foamed using AG foam gun/CG Citrus Wash/lambswool mitt

-Taped off seams to prep for compounding

-Compounded using DK Vibra Cut Lite II/8" Green Edge Wave Pad/15000 RPMs

-Washed car to get dust off

-Polished using Menz 106ff/Blue 6" Edge Pad/1200 RPMs

Before

Right side has not been touched, left side is compounded

The owner of the garage, and my favorite client, then showed up and asked me to wash his car for him. As the photos show, I had no problem doing this for him. This was the bonus of the day.

For the owner's privacy, I have removed him from this picture (my car is in the background)

The clear on this car is amazing. All I did was foam it down twice with the AG foam gun, and dry...no mitt! Then dryed, polished the chrome wheels, and vacuumed the interior. Take a look at this shot at dusk off of the hood!

At this point, my leg was killing me, and it was getting late. I'll be back sometime this coming week to finish the Lincoln. I will post picks in my Part 2 post. As an added bonus, a couple of my client's friends came by to watch the Cubs/Diamondbacks game, and I am meeting with one of them today to discuss some detailing on his various boats, cars and trucks. Business is starting to move along nicely!

Nice work on that Lincoln. That thing is ha-uge!!! The Bentleys are nice. My dad had one for a while before getting tired of it. It was black also. Unfortunately, I never got a chance to work on it...

Thanks for the comments! Honestly, the leg isn't necessarily "broken"...hairline fracture just below the knee. Regardless, it hurts a lot. Getting to work on the Bentley, even though it was just wash, was a true treat.

Another fondness factor I had on the paint was the color. The base was black, but there was a combination metallic added that gave the car an almost copper tone to it. On the '49 Merc that I did (in the Click & Brag forum), black is the only way to go. But on this GT, the copper hue was super nice.
