Yellowpages.com warning!

I registered for a free account with them and since then have received 3 calls a day for the past day trying to upgrade my account. I kindly asked one of them to stop calling and he said ok and then proceeded to email me telling me I didn't know how to advertise my company etc. Fast forward to this morning and a girl calls and keeps rambling on and on all high pressure so I kindly cut her off and say I'm not interested and to please stop calling. She proceeds to try pressuring me into an upgraded package so I repeated that I wasn't interested and that I was fine with my free package, finally I just hung up on her. 5 minutes later I got another call! This time I just didn't pick up. ***! Now I can't log on to my account to delete it because my email address that they emailed me at isn't in their system! End Rant

I went through something similar, and also get "bills" sent to me asking me to verify the info is correct and to pay by certain date. I called questioning it one day and they said I signed up for it and we went back and forth for 5 min and finally came to the conclusion that I didnt and I didnt have to pay the bill...pretty shady if you ask me

I'm wary of anyone associated with "yellow pages" in their name. Do a search for "yellow pages scam" and you'll find tons of info (consumersist.com). There has been a long-running scam for billing, not just endless calls to upgrade.

The problem lies that the term neither "Yellow pages" nor the 'walking fingers' logo are trademarked, so any business can call you stating they are the Yellow Pages and trick business to enter into a contract for a listing. Some even record the conversation and edit it to sound like you are authorizing the billing.

Be careful out there.

Edit: Toyotaguy, I had the same thing here where they kept faxing me bills and calling trying to collect $499.95 for a listing I never authorized. They threatened court action if I didn't respond. When I asked for a number to call someone at their office they would give me an 800 number that didn't work. They had a "sales guy" call me and left a number to reach him back. Two days later that number was disconnected as well.

I eventually filed a report with the FTC and they stopped calling me.

If anyone ever calls you to verify your business information for their free directory, in which your info is already listed, don't. You'll end up with a hefty monthly charge on your phone bill. One of my employees did that once and I got a $99.95 charge the next month.

It's a standard practice for companies like that to send invoices that "are not a bill" but are an offer that you are agreeing to by paying the bill. They always have fine print on them that stipulates that it's not a bill but an offer that you are not bound to accept. It is their hope that some accounts payable clerk blindly enters it into the system and it gets paid.

+1, you are absolutely correct. This isn't limited to Yellow Pages either, but long distance phone carriers do it, as well as some subscription type services (like magazines). Always be mindful of the bills you pay.

Just do as I would do. If a high pressure female sells person calls me I will start asking her personal questions such as > do you have big boobies, what color panties are you wearing, how much do you weigh, can you send me a pic....By this point she is usually ready to hang up.

If it is a male caller, I will let them make there spill and then tell them, "Oh, I'm sorry I was reading my email. Could you please repeat youself. If they are stupid enough to go through there spill again, Then I respond "Oh, I'm sorry, I had to take the dog out to tinkle" could you run that by me one more time

They tend to never call back

Well, I learned that from David Fermani, so the credit should really go to him.

What is this giving credit where credit is due attitude you have

Well, i signed up on bing.com and yp.com Bing said they would mail out a confirmation code and my yp.com listing is still being "processed". I had a phone call the same day I signed up and it was to log onto searchenginesetup.com and enter some promo code. I'm wondering if they're related to yp.com. I never talked to the guy, only got it on my v/m so I couldn't ask how he got my info.
