just got in my random orbital from griots and the whole kit so like a kid with a new toy i whipped it out and went to work on my wifes 07 vw rabbit. and in the garage i was amazed at how it looked then i took it out in the sun and damn i liked it alot better in the shade. problem is now i have a weird hologram type shine on it instead of sparkle and bling. here is what i did i washed with g's carwash then i clayed it then i went to the #3 polish then i finished with 2 coats of best of show wax. and the paint is smoother than it has ever been its only 5 months old. WHAT DID I DO WRONG:wall AND HOW CAN I FIX IT :waxing: PLEASE HELP thanks

Holograms are caused by insufficient polishing. You didn't work the polish long enough and it didn't finish down properly. Try polishing again but longer this time and don't move on until you've perfected the one area you're working on.

Could also just be excessive wax....I know nothing about #3 polish to know if it's abrasive enough to leave holograms with an orbital.

That is exactly what I was thinking too.

What you describe could have also been caused by claying.

Either way don't panic, it can be resolved. :waxing:

Griot's #3 machine polish is pretty mild, so it sounds like you didn't work the polish long enough. You should buff it with the orbital ( I am assuming that you meant the Griots version of the Porter Cable 7424 polisher) one small area at a time until the polish just about disappears, then use a microfiber to remove any residue.

I highly doubt you put in holograms with a PC in a VW. VW clear is very hard and difficult to mess up with a PC.

You probably just didn't work it in enough so it didn't come completely off when you tried to remove it or as mentioned just didn't get off all the wax.

You're probably used to putting stuff on thick by hand, with the PC it's totally opposite, put it on very lightly and spread it around good and then turn up the speed and work it in well.

As well as the above, i have heard of people getting wax holograms with Swissvax stuff, although havent used it personally. Did you put 2 layers on immediately after each other? How long did you leave it before buffing off? I would have thought 12-24 hrs between wax coats and am not sure exactly what the cure time for BoS is?

oh i did not know that i had to wrk the polish till it disappears thanks..... oh one more question what is the best way to strip the new wax ?

Megs #3 is for all practical purposes, NON-abrasive. An intense buffing with it isn't going to do much more than smooth out the finest of imperfections, leaving the paint wonderfully smooth to the touch, but far from free of swirls/scratches.

Odds are, all you did was chemically clean up the paint and make the imperfections more visible than they were before. #3 was designed to be used AFTER the swirl/scratch removal step and immediately before applying the wax/sealer. What you need to do is step up to a more aggressive cleaner/polish to remove the defects, then reapply the #3 and your sealant. Some examples (from the Megs line) are: #80, #82, #83 or #9. Any one of these products will also strip all wax/sealant off of the car so you'll have a fresh start.

Before re-polishing the car, I would try wiping it down with some QD. If the problem is that you didn't wipe off all the excess wax then this will fix it. No need to go to the effort of re-polishing if not necessary. Just try the QD on one panel first to see if that fixes the problem.

the paint wasnt in that bad a shape the car is only 5 months old and garage kept. so what is the best way to strip down the new wax ? i plan on using megs soon just getting my feet wet wwith the griots.

Any quality paint cleaner/polish will strip off the wax & let you start fresh. If you're looking at the Megs line, Color-X is a 3 in 1 very similar to Klasse AIO. Deep Crystal #1 (paint cleaner) or Deep Crystal #2 (pure polish) are also decent options...I actually use these as my prep because they are so readily available, easy to use (work great with a PC) and are extremely inexpensive.

New (06 and up) VW's have the same water based paint as most manufactures and it is MUCH softer than before. I have a black 07 Rabbit and it's such a pain. The wife has a 2004 Jetta and I could wash it with a brick and it would still look great, I've never polished it in 2 years...

That being said I don't think you put in holograms with a PC. It's probably excessive product, not breaking down the polish or swirls from the claying.
