Xbox 360 Owners

Hey guys, well my Xbox 360 will be arriving tomorrow. Been doing a lot of reading on games and what not. Then tonight I kept reading thread after thread on hardware errors, red rings of death...Are most of these issues coming from pre-2006 machines or what? Have people on here had problems with theres...Im really worried what I got myself into now with all these reports of their Xbox breaking down either right away or 5 months down the road.

I hope it's not coming USPS if you're expecting it tomorrow. It's a national day of mourning for Ford and only express packages are being delivered.

I am not an owner, but live with one lol.

One night while having a few buddies over, the xbox died had the "red rings of death." A buddy called Microsoft claiming the system was only 3 months old, and we got a new one. That was about 4 months ago and it hasn't had troubles since. Almost everyone I have talked to that has one, has encountered problems/issues and one time or another, but have always gotten replacements.

Greg,

It seems like all the machines now are being sent in for the repair which takes around 15 days. I purchased mine off ebay brand new, factory sealed, blah blah so hopefully the new 1 year warranty will still apply. Im sure it applies to all machines basically since they have had so many issues...just crossing my fingers I get lucky and dont have any issues. Glad to hear you guys havent had problems lately though.

My older son got one for christmas 05, since then he has had the "red ring of death" twice. The most recent being in the beginning of December. Microsoft was very good taking care of the problem, both times I called 1-800-4MY-XBOX and they recorded the serial number and send me a prepaid box to ship to them. Turnaround was 7-10 business days. The second time same thing, only difference was that his mother wanted to ensure that he had it back before christmas and sent it next day air on her coin. Only suggestion would be to be sure all warranty paper work and registrations are taken care of. I also highly suggest purchasing the intercooler. I purchased those for both of my son's 360's and noticed they run cooler to the touch than before they had them. Picked the intercoolers up at Target for $24.99 in the 360 section. Other than that no real issues. As far as the "red ring" failures my older son had with his....who knows. Only real factors I could attribute to possible failure were heat and him constantly transporting it between his mother's house and mine, and his friends houses. He has also made several trips to AZ and NJ with the 360.

On a side note, the 1 year warranty started over with the delivery of the replacement unit. So the second time it was sent out, Microsoft picked up the tab again.

Mine started to lock up yesterday with regularity. It had been infrequent and typically during online play. Yesterday it decided it would lock up within the 1st minute, regardless of the game.

This seems to be a common - actually quite frequent - problem since Microsoft released the Fall patch on XBOX Live. I'm going to wait to see if any remedy patches are released in the next couple weeks, and if nothing comes, the XBOX is going in.

Btw, I've had mine since March '06.

Mine just arrived today - Went to Best Buy and bought Xbox Live and was going to get Rainbow 6 Vegas but they were all out so I bought Gears Of War...Love this game!

With my Xbox it came with a paper I can send it for a 2 year warranty for $60. I think I might go ahead and do it just so I can have 3 years of warranty on it? Would this be correct? I really hope these newer systems now going out dont have as much problems as some have had.

Walter: Thanks for the information. I actually pre-ordered an intercooler off Amazon it is the Intech one which plugs into the wall so it doesnt steal power from the Xbox, it should arrive Jan. 27, until then I have a small fan sitting by the xbox keeping it cool. :D Cant wait until the intercooler gets here though because it glows haha :dance

I think Im going to have to make a trip tomorrow to the next nearest Best Buy and pick up Vegas. I also have Test Drive Unlimited on the way. Thanks guys!

If you purchased it with a CC alot of them offer a double warranty automatically. Check that out before paying to extend it.

Just as an update for prospective buyers.

I bought my console at CC, found the receipt just today, and realized that I had purchased their 1 yr protection plan. So I was able to pick up a new premium system today, and just swap out the hard drive.

Even though microsoft has extended their warranty to 1 yr, I've been reading on XBOX forums that they replace the broken unit with a refurbished unit. So, even though warranties offered by chain stores are typically a money maker for the seller, this ended up (for me) as a case where the added price was worth it.
