WOW Info Overload!!!

I have just started reading this forum and have recieved alot of info, Some of the acronyms have me going a little crazy trying to figure them out (bf, aio, SF). However, my car was painted a few months ago in a really crappy manner and it will be repainted in a couple of days. Normally on my paint i have used meguiars gold class and the show car glaze polish. This year i will be entering my car into a few competitions. How well do the polishes and waxes that i just listed fare with other polishes like the zaino or blackfire or klasse?

My car is Bright Red.

Welcome! :wavey

Well, first off, there is a link here on the board that defines all of our often-used acronyms. The ones you asked about, in particular:

BF: Blackfire, a sealant with supposedly carnauba-like properties (I've never used it)

AIO: Klasse All-In-One, a very, very good paint cleaner. It also adds a layer of protection by itself that rivals many waxes.

SF: Uhhh.... I dunno, I can't think of anything for SF. Maybe you meant "MF" (microfiber, a popular type of cloth here)? Check the acronym sheet, though. Not sure. :nixweiss

Good luck in your competitions! I'm sure that most people here will agree in that the vast, vast majority of your results will stem from your prep work; that is, using Pinnacle Souveran, a $70 paste wax, over a crappy finish is not going to get you drop-dead results. However, removing as many imperfections as humanly possible (swirls / minor scratches, contamination, and that sort of thing), polishing the paint, glazing (if necessary, really), and topping that with a wax will look great. There's many routes you could take, though, like:

Wash > Clay > Swirl Removal > Meguiar's No. 7 (which you may be familiar with; you'll still want to do a swirl removal prior to this, though, since it is better to get rid of (most of) the problem rather than just hiding it) > Meguiar's No. 26 or P21S

Wash > Clay > Swirl Removal > Klasse AIO > Klasse SG > P21S

Wash > Clay > Swirl Removal > Wash > The Zaino System (I'm not a user, can't give specifics here)

There's lots more.

Of course, you will definitely want to make sure you wait the prescribed amount of time before you start waxing / sealing fresh paint. :xyxthumbs

If it is a showcar I dont think you really need a paint sealant. You can just use a quality carnauba over your prepped and polished paint. S100/P21S seems to be the forum favorite right now. The megs products are very good although the durability of their wax is not as long as others. Mothers has an awesome glaze for less than $10 as well.

The best shine comes from a little product we call elbow grease.

Caution: Don’t apply a sealant until the paint has cured. Ask your painter how long to wait for your particular paint.

For a show car with new paint I’d recommend SMR as needed, then a finer polish such as GEPC, then many, many layers of a glaze such as IHG.

For a daily driver with new paint I’d recommend SMR as needed, then a finer polish such as GEPC, then a glaze such as IHG, followed by a synthetic sealant such as Klasse, Platinum, or Zaino, and topped with a good quality carnauba such as P21S or Souverän.

If the car is driven while waiting for the paint to cure, then start with claying before the SMR.

Good luck and have fun!

where can i find where all these meguiar #'s mean lol :D. Whats SMR, GEPC, IHG? Are they product brands? So lost. Should start a thread on all the acronyms haha. (i vote for that :p ). umm n/m what i just said. i read on another post there's an acronym page...where is it?

MikesJo,

There is a list of acronyms on that links from the homepage. It can be found toward the top of the left side of the page. Click on it and you will see a handy list of them all, which you might want to print out as a reference.

In brief:

SMR: 3M Swirl Remover (available for both light and dark colored paints)

Meg's #9: Swirl Remover

Meg's #7: Show Car Glaze

Meg's DACP: Dual Action Cleaner Polish

IHG: 3M Imperial Hand Glaze

and so on...

Thanks jcattarulla, just found the page ;). Man there are so many products.. And so many different titles/names to each. Oh btw, BMW :xyxthumbs.

do searches, and read the autopia articles. Lots of good stuff in there. There is almost always an answer to your questions, and questions you hadn't thought of, but will.

Also buy the book if you can, i can't because I'm a MaCintosh user, but I will if DavidB ever gets it compatible. I love this site

GC (Gold Class) is a very good wax but note that it is a cleaner / wax.

Personally, the BodyShop line seems to be slightly better than the Pro line which is miles ahead of the 1-2-3 line.

Products to consider from the Body Shop line are:

Dual Action Cleaner Polish

Swirl Free Polish

Hand Polish

Also, rather than Hand Polish, consider Clearkote's Vanilla Moose and P21S GEPC or S100 SEPC (nearly if not identical products - car line vs motorcycle line).

Some of the pro line products are quickly become "old school" type products here. There are some really good new products worth considering.

For a daily driver car, sealants are the way to go.

For a show car or weekend driver, it becomes more a case of what type of look you are trying to achieve.

Reflectivity - Zaino or some other the other sealants

Wet deep paint - Carnuba or Blackfire.

For carnuba's - S100, Moose Wax from Clearkote or Pinnacle's line is your best bang for your buck.

Download DavidB's book, from the front page. It is full of great information and tips. It will also be one of the best investments you could make in detailing your car.
