I am getting ready to start detailing cars from my garage. I am a woman in my mid-thirties and have experience working at a major dealership as a Body Shop Administrator in a small town of Western Ky. I will also have a small part-time job as I get started. Should I go ahead and pay for the LLC and insurance if something were to happen to a customer's car and to protect the property or assests? HELP!!!!!

Your working with someone else's property. Even the best make mistakes. Innsurance is a must. You don't need to be an LLC, but contact an accountant about this, It has its benefits.

Thanks for the advice, I think my husband was going to make me pay for the insurance anyway. I didn't really want to buy the insurance but I think you are both right!!!!

Welcome to Autopia. When I started out, my insurance agent made it clear to me that if I burned the paint, that that would not be covered. But if there was a camera in the car while I had the car and the camera was stolen, that would covered. Ask the right questions. Good luck.

As mentioned, talk to an accountant and a lawyer about what will best fit your needs as far as going the LLC route vs. sole proprietorship/etc.

It also bears asking: how much hands-on experience with detailing did you actually get as a Body Shop Administrator?

That's definitely something dependent on who is writing the policy; mine does cover any accidental/incidental damage to the vehicle. You're right, it's important to ask lots of questions when you go to an agent for a quote.

I did not get any experience with detailing, BUT, I love to detail cars and would love the freedom of not sitting behind and desk and being my OWN boss. Plus, I will be substitute teaching on the side as well.

I have found that the start-up costs are more than you might expect. Buffers, pads, chemicals for EVERY part of the car, various MF towels, applicators, brushes, carpet cleaning equipment; on and on.

There are various posts on marketing and start-up. Getting customers, perhaps by an announcement from the business editor in your local news paper. You need to let people know who and where you are.

Best of luck!
