Generally I try to keep abrasives off such surfaces. You can get away with abrading them a bit, but they it's once too often and you get failure.
Along the edges, I work parallel/"with the edge" as opposed to perpendicular/"against the edge" as it seems to result in less product being deposited along the edge of the decal (which can be a PIA to get off without causing problems).
