I just got back from a cancer benefit for a co-worker. I won a Tikka T3, Hunter rifle, blued barrel, synthetic stock, chambered in .308. I need some suggestions in optics. I`m looking to spend around $250-300 for a scope.

Im open to suggestions, Leupold, Nikon, Vortex, Zeiss. What do you guys suggest?

In case anyone was wondering I only bought $40 worth of tickets at $10 a piece, only 100 tickets sold. Good odds I guess.

Congratulations.....in the price range you`re in, your best options (among those listed) would be either Leupold or Nikon. I have several Leupold scopes, and in the VX-II series, there are options which fall into your price range. Nikon is offering scopes with a `no risk` guarantee...meaning they`re warranted almost regardless of what happens to them...a nice selling point. Keep in mind, that you`re paying for the glass.....I recommend you get the best quality you can afford. You`re talking about a 750.00 (or more) rifle....don`t put a 150.00 scope on it...

just my .02

at holding 4% of the tickets - i`d say good luck, bad odds (statistically)

I think I might be the only Texan who doesn`t have a gun :o

I don`t know anything about guns but that rifle looks sweet. I have no scope suggestion obviously then.

Nice rifle you won there. I had one in 6.5X55 Swede cartridge. Bought it from a friend and traded to another friend.

You couldn`t go wrong with a Zeiss scope if you want to spend the money. I don`t have one but they have top of the line glass in them. A couple good ones I own are Bushnell Elite series, I have a discontinued Browning model made by them, equivalent to the Elite 4500. It is a nice scope. Vortex is another one I own and even though it is not as clear as the Bushnell it is a real nice scope for the money. I use them for bench shooting and the Bushnell is 6-24 in the standard 1" power and the Vortex is 8-32 is a 30mm tube. I believe the reason the Bushnell is slightly more clear is because of the power range. The clarity in the two are about the same in the low to mid range but the Vortex gets a little distorted in the high end of the power range.

Hope this information helps.

PS, not sure what the rules are in off topic about posting other websites but delete this if necessary. For a great price on optic online check out SWFA. bad thing is you don`t get to look through them before buying.

I need to go to one of the local sporting goods stores and look through some different glass.

Skibik,
I was impressed by the Bushnell Elite binos my brother in law has. I will look at their scopes as well.
I absolutely love my Vortex Viper 8x42 binos. I`m fortunate to have won the gun. Looking forward to punching some holes through the some targets at 200-300 yards.

I`m pretty sure it`s written in the Texas state constitution that you are committing a felony by not owning a rifle:)

I own a number of guns and don`t hunt. I prefer to punch paper. Cheaper and always have something to shoot.

I am normally a very pessimistic person when it comes to odds. At 4% or 1:25 odds last night. I thought my odds were ok. I guess I didn`t mind putting $40 towards the good cause either. I would never buy $40 worth of raffle tickets unless going to someone or something that supports a good cause. 4% sounds way worse than 1:25. I just need my 1:250,000,000 powerball odds to hit.

sorry im a buzkill with stats thanks to college. hahaha

and yes, I do believe I am breaking the law by not having a gun/rifle....maybe I`ll ask for one for Christmas this year

Congratulations, can`t get any better than winning a gun. When I think about Tikka, I think ooowww... my friend shoots one regularly, .7 mm, it`s light and it hits your shoulder like a train. .308 won`t do that.

I have one recommendation when it comes to buying a scope. I don`t mean for this to sound silly either. Plan on spending more than you were expecting to pay when it comes to buying quaity glass. You mentioned several manufacturers that make great scopes. That said, at least a couple of these brands has there lower priced line manufactured in entirely different facilities than where there the scopes that made them great are made. A Leupold, is a Leupold, is a Leupold for example could not be further from the truth and Leupold makes some great scopes in their upper lines.

.308 is a very versitle caliber, it can do a lot of things and is one of my favorite all around calibers. Decide how you`re going to use and at what range. That should give you a place to start. If you`re shooting out to 500 yards for example a fixed 4 power isn`t the scope for you. Lastly, quality rings cost $$$ but make a quality scope do all it can.

Brandt, I had held you in such high esteem. I don`t think I`d tell your neighbors that. :)

I hunted years ago and all I had was the cheaper straight 4 power. I don`t hunt anymore but enjoy going to the range to let off some steam and have fun. My good friend got me into the idea of not skimping on a scope. I bought a bench gun in .223, when it come to a scope he found the Browning scope(the one mentioned in my post made by Bushnell) and suggested I buy it. All I could think of was the price tag, little too much just to punch holes on paper. It was discontinued and it was a good deal being discounted and I am happy I bought it. The Vortex is a nice scope, that one doesn`t have a home as it was the one on the T3 that I had. The only downfall to the scope is the clarity falls off over 25 power. I think I paid around $200 for it and for the money I can live with the clarity problem. I do have a Redfield(made by Mead) and believe they are still made, it is on my Kimber .22 target rifle. Nice scope and it was cheap as I bought it used.

Now when you talk binoculars. My good friend has a Swarovski made pair. Now I could never spend a G on a pair of binoculars but all I can say is wow, talk about clear. I was almost afraid of holding because of the price tag. He bought them years ago and think you would have a hard time finding them short of twice that.

Good luck with your search and have fun at the range.

i`m with ronkh, if you`ve got the money- zeiss. the very best in quality, but very expensive.
Nikon is your best value for a high quality scope that won`t break the bank. they really stand behind their lifetime warranty and it doesn`t matter if you were the original purchaser or not, they will fix or replace their scopes.
