Women in Combat

"WASHINGTON — All U.S. military combat jobs, including infantry units and special operations, will be open to women beginning next year, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced Thursday.

Carter said the decision was part of his commitment to build a force of the future. The ban will be lifted in 30 days, he said, and the services have until April 1 to accommodate women in all roles."

What do you think? A few thoughts...

1. This is bad.

2. This is really bad.

3. This is really really really bad.

They want to be equal, I say we go to an all women infantry for next few years the guys could use a break (small attempt at humor for those who dont get sarcasm). I dont know if it will be good or bad it's a very unique situation the solders are in. I am so unfamiliar with the real day to day workings of the job they do in front line combat that I would have to leave those decisions to the people directly in charge of those units. I dont think if they say women can not be in there units that it does any real appreciable harm to women. I just fell like these people do a job I pray I never have to and affords me the right to not have to, so as long as they are not truly hurting someone maliciously then I say Thank you to them. It may hurt feelings it may block a few women from doing a job they want while thats not ideal if it is whats needed I can sleep at night with those sacrifices for the safety of the people in those units. The part on that quote that scares me is the "the services have until April 1 to accommodate women in all roles." what does accommodate mean to them, be able to look at candidates?, fill a quota for a percentage of females per unit?. I hope this still means they will be picking the people for the units based on ability.

I have seen some women going through menopause or a rough pre menstrual cycle that would make pretty vicious combat soldiers. I say we put them on a testosterone regimen and turn them loose. muslim terrorist problem solved. :o

So does that mean they are going to make ladies start signing up for the draft when they turn 18 also?

I think it's simply....a complicated subject. Women have served ably in Combat units in many instances through the ages; anybody who doubts that women can do the job hasn't looked into the documented history on the subject.

(Yeah, of course the whole thing has to be implemented properly. Good luck with that, because... )

BUT...this isn't Israel/Russia/etc. in that we Americans have deep-rooted gender-related beliefs that could make a seemingly workable idea problematic the the Real World. People who know from Combat Infantry say it's not gonna work the way the Policy Wonks want it to. Maybe the (real) experts here oughta be listened to.

IMO this isn't so much about women's ability to do the job as it is about people who don't know what they're talking about trying to legislate reality to fit their preconceived notions. Again.

This seems to be a major problem across a lot of subjects in this country

Integrating women into combat reduces effectiveness, harms unit cohesion: report - Washington Times

Bottom line....studies have been done and revealed combat units are less effective with women mixed in. Gov. says to hell with it, we're doing it anyway. I think it's great that women want to serve. I think there's many places they serve admirably and do a job as well if not better than a man. But...if their inclusion reduces the effectiveness of a unit, it shouldn't be done. I have a massive problem with the PC direction our culture is being sickened by to begin with, and the last place it belongs is in our fighting forces and war.

The divorce rates in the military are higher than other professions already. Back to back to back deployments do not make for a strong family. Now throw in mixed units where your buddy is a female, well let's say everyone understands office romances, now you are working with someone of the opposite sex 24/7. It already happens in service support units. Men are dogs and women are not much better. I was company commander at FT McPherson and we had unit readiness problems due to a high pregnancy rate in our MP unit. Guess what? Pregnant soldiers are undeployable. And believe it or not some women will get pregnant just so they don't have to be deployed to a war zone. Someone mentioned an all female unit. That is not a bad idea. We have to have an effective fighting force and distractions such a love have no place in a unit. When you mix men and women together you are going to have sexual tension and problems. There will be more fights among males over females and females over males. I don't even won't to get into whether a woman can do a mans job, that is a case by case discussion. Some women are better suited for some jobs. I've had women that were stronger than some men under my command. But it really comes down to morale. The men will try to protect the females at all costs and that is not good for an important mission.

Basically, my main problem with this is the military is now discriminating against the intersexed and transgendered. Since men and women can serve in combat arms now - what to do if someone doesn't completely identify as female or male but wants to enlist?

I'm calling for immediate legislation to be adopted that clearly allows the gender neutral or "genderxxxxx" to also be allowed to serve in combat arms.

Also, I see no reason not to deploy pregnant female soldiers into combat. I find the notion of not doing such offensive and discriminatory to my reproductive rights as a man.

Once the military has reached an enlightened state of post-genderism, I would like to see all age restrictions dropped from the military as well. Age discrimination is an evil that is deeply rooted in Western Culture (as are most modern evils) - and we must take steps to exterminate it. So, eventually I say - if an infant or an octogenarian can carry a pack on a march to requirements - they should also be allowed to serve.

We are just not built the same (for the most part, - there are exceptions), and that can be a challenge out in the field, and under fire..

When GI's have to scale very high buildings, hills, etc., and then Jump - out of said objects, how well will that work on the strongest feminine body out there that day?

And you are right - most guys will want to shield and protect them from danger and that can possibly lead to some even more dangerous situations...

Yes, there are women legends out there (Snipers, etc.,) that served in WWII, and Vietnam, and every war even today.. But again, do you really want to go there ???

I am not being patronizing, etc., when I say - Dear Sisters, you bring so much beauty, strength, order, peace, and love to the world, please don't leave what you excel in - what you are so needed in - to go to the front lines and risk your lives there...

Motherhood - the actual human engineering of your children alone, can never in a zillion years be accomplished by anyone else, and that is just one part of the many, many, things Womanhood brings to the world - day in, and day out, and never complains or gets tired of doing it...

I say its a bad idea..
