With a new vehicle, whats the grace period before letting your Insurance company know

Now that I think about when I bought my new vehicle today, the dealer forgot to take Insurance info from me. With it being a weekend holiday I won't be able to notify my agent until Tuesday. Is their a grace period that allows you to be covered?

well the dealership does'nt want you to know this but they provide temp. insurance for 7 days(at least when i was selling cars). So you should'nt worry too much about it. On tuesday when everything opens back up just call your insurance company. I'm sure it will be ok.

Most reputable insurance companies in the state of CA will cover your purchase for 30 days without notice. Well at least that's what I got from AAA.

Why wait to call your agent, why not just call the insurance company directly and give them the info, most companies have the phones manned 24/7

Insurance in Los Angeles is HIGH. The 30 day period becomes a "freebie" as they don't back charge you for this period. This saved a good amount of money in my case and was actually a benefit of the policy.

Most states 30 days, I've been in the car business 20 years and we never gave anyone 7 days free coverage. We always call from the dealership to verify coverage and make changes. If we can't verify coverage, the customer has to produce a declaration page or the car stays.

I will have to second that. I was in the same situation and freaked out about the insurance. It is seven days.

So it seems its 7 and or 30 days. I spoke with my mother who lives in Florida. She used to be in the insurance buissness, and she said 30 days. Regardless I think I'm cool until Tuesday.

I appreciate the responses, I am a little more comfortable now. Although when we bought my wifes SUV a few months ago they called her company right then and there. Why we still have different insurance companys is beyond me. I think its soon to change.
