Winterizing w/ 845

Even though its barely August, I'm already starting to think about getting my 2009 black Audi ready for the sometimes harsh Michigan winter.

I use Zaino products. I use Z6/Z8 pretty much every week.

After perusing this site, it seems like 845 is the way to go for the winter. (Open to suggestions though). My questions have to do with the application of it:

1) What should I do to prepare the paint for the 845? I plan on applying the 845 over the Zaino, with no polishing. Is this the way to go? I was thinking of using Sonus Ultra Fine Clay followed by the 845, 2 layers. I just as soon skip the claying if its not necessary.

2) What is the best way to apply the 845? (I know that you have to shake the bottle until your arms fall off - and then shake it some more.) I was thinking of using a PC with a LC gray pad. I've never applied wax with a PC though.

TIA

I think you need a pre-cleaner or a light polish such as menzerna po85rd before you start applying sealants and waxes

I am not so sure the 845 over zaino would provide much additional protection as Zaino is pretty hard to beat on it's own. Actually if you put the 845 in a tub of warm water it will thin down and require just a 30 second shake or so. IMO there is no reason to to remove the zaino before applying the 845, in fact I feel it would be detrimental protection wise to do so. In my opinion 476s/885 or 1000p would give better winter protection than 845, although 845 is very good as well.

I think you will find that the zaino will give you just as good if not better protection than the 815. If your zaino is still beading, looking nice, and feeling slick i would just put the 815 over the top of it w/o any prep. Polishing or clay will remove the zaino and reduce protection on the paint.

You can use the pc to apply 815. Use a finishing pad, a medium speed like 4 or 5 and light pressure. You don't need very much product on the pad. 2-4 skittle sized dots per panel usually. I usually apply it by hand w/ a foam applicator but that is just personal taste i guess. Always remember to apply it thin or else it will be a PITA to remove.

Although 845 and 476s are similar, if you are about to buy and have a choice, I've had better results with 476s/885.

In my posts, I've shared the results of using it this winter. I had at least 5months of protection in canadian winter.

I do suggest putting two layers to ensure coverage.

And its not that hard to use the paste, just keep it thin.

For me, when using a paste, I use less product. For a liquid, I use up a bit more so cost wise, they're compatible.

Hope this helps.

Ditto on the "Zaino is pretty good on its own" and I also get a bit better longevity from 476S than 845 IW. 845 is more fun to apply, tho.

Carefully claying is a good idea. Though I would prep the paint with ZAIO and follow with 1000P.

If you want to use the 845, I would definitely prep with something like Sonus Green Clay and ZAIO.

I live in MI as well, the winters are brutal on a finish. I use ZAIO and 1000P, it lasts me from Nov. to Feb. before I add another layer.

+2.

Perhaps someone familiar with the Zaino product line can mention a product that would be fully compatible with your existing Zaino. No need to re-invent the wheel, IMO.

I have used 1000p over zaino and the looks and protection is amazing. I have experienced no streaking, loss of durability or any problems with this combo. With zaino being pretty much optically clear, I have found 1000p hiding a few mini swirls from a distance (not saying 1000p has fillers just a paste type product) all without taking away any gloss/shine from the zaino which for me on daily drivers is an enhanced look. The only downside (which would be the same when applying any wax and most sealants excluding opti-seal) is needing to strip the lsp if deciding to go back to zaino.

There you have it. Listen to him. No need to do any serious prep. Sonus green (see if it's necessary and do it very gently) then go with the FK1000P.

I'd do a few coats of the FK1000P (just put five on my YukonXLD).

I've never been all *that* impressed with the durability of 845, and a specific head-scratcher is why it doesn't last long on the A8's rear bumper cover

BTW, the pseudo-hologram potential of 476S would keep me from recommending it on a black car. Good stuff though, it's what I had on the Yukon previously.

Interesting discussion. I'm planning to top a couple layers of UPGP with 845 this winter. I figured that would make for a pretty impenetrable coat of armor against the bombardment of salt and sand we get in Virginia. Certainly for the four-five months 'til Spring.
