Hello all, new to detailing and new to the forum. Lots of questions but will try to search and find answers before I pester the board. The first one I will go ahead and ask.

Living in Alaska means 5-6 months when I cant wash in the driveway, and I dont want to have to fall back on the $10.00 drive through wash except as a last resort. But winter also means salt, dirt, and other assorted nasties on the road and my cars. What do you detailers in other cold locations do to solve this dilemma short of washing in a heated garage?

Michael:confused:

geez, i almost lost site of how i used to do it before my dealer days. get a part time job at a dealer so you can wash it in the shop :xyxthumbs

but seriously, my dad and i would use 3-4 5 gallon buckets filled with warm water, not hot !! then another bucket with the regular soap and water. maybe we would cruise past the local do-it-yourself wash place and rinse the car really good. but we would use a butter cup to get the car wet and then wash it normally. then starting from the top down, use the butter cup and the buckets of water to rinse the car. this is how we did it. usually in the garage but i did it outside in the cold air too

hopefully you can get some days where it is about 30-32 or above for your wash. 32 in chicago winters is awesome for a wash :D

I'm in Alaska too.. as much as I like winters here, all of the cars get really dirty with all the gravel they put on the roads.. especially at spring break up time with all the puddles everywhere. I actually just put my car in the garage and wash it like I would outside. Just without spraying water all over the place with the hose though.. I use just enough to wash everything off. The water drains pretty quick and dries up quick as well.

I usually do this once every week or two weeks.. Its nice to have a clean car when everyone elses is completely covered in dirt.. heh. Although it usually is dirty again after a day or two of driving again anyway

There is No way to keep your car clean more then a day up here. With all the water salt sand and Crap on the roadways it is inpossible. The best next thing is to have your paint in excellent condition and a few coats of wax on your car. This way you can hose your car down a few times a week and all the s--t comes off.Not a perfect system but its the best that you can do.I am one of the lucky one I have a place to work with my cars but it doesnt make a difference a good part of the year they get dirty in a few hours anyway. That is why I strive for the best products available it least they last a little longer

This will be my first winter since finding this sit. My plan is to stick to QEW and just apply EX twice a month or so. Klasse might be the ticket though if it is as durable as said.
