Windows OS question

Big Leegr

Swirls?!?! NNOOOOOOO!!!!!
A relative of mine recently got her first computer (used). I think it runs XP.
My question is "how far back of OS programs will XP be able to recognize?" I have some old disks that list Windows '95 and '98 on them as system requirements that I thought I'd give her to use (basic word processing, print shop etc.). Is there a cut off for usability? Like 2 or 3 versions max? (I'm using a mac, and my old computer/brick runs '98, so I'm not going to be testing this personally.
Plus technology mocks me. :( )
Thanks for any help!

How do you like your Mac?

Loooove it. I would have liked to have had a mac as my first computer, if it hadn't been so expensive.
Much more intuitive (IMO) than Windows 95/98. (Haven't played much with the newer Windows, so I can't compare them, but I hear the new Windows 7 is supposed to be pretty nice.)
Biggest complaint is the price. Second (at the time of purchase) was the lack of compatability with peripherals, but that's getting better.
Biggest plus-no blue screens of death. Used daily, it "just works." ;)

I am not sure if they would work or not, but you could install OpenOffice, it is a free Microsoft Office Clone. The web site is OpenOffice.org - The Free and Open Productivity Suite.
Thanks, but I was thinking of just making use of what I had laying around if possible. My relative could buy the new versions, but she is of retirement age and got the computer just to play cards and some e-mailing, so if she doesn't get some program, she's not likely to miss it.
But thanks for the option!

Depends on the service paks on the used computer and the appZ you are hoping to run. To beging with I would go to settings> control panel> scheduled tasks> & add scheduled task > set system restore to each time the computer starts, and when completed go to start > all programs.> accessories > sytem tools > and system restore & create a initial restore point. This way if the computer has problems wwhen you load the old appZ on it you can always roll back to last good know running configuration.
