Window Polish with a PC

I am about to buy some glass polish that I can use with my PC. I plan on using it on the windshield, side windows and on the glass shower doors in the bathrooms.. Griots has two products they sell for this and recommend using their orange pad..

Before I buy, anyone else try anything that works too?

Dana:confused:

If you are going to use it on the shower, why not just try any paint polish/cleaner you have on that first? See if that does the job you are looking for? Just a thought...

I thought about that and wondered if it would be too abrasive.. dont want a bunch of swirl marks in the glass that I would have to fix or explain when I have to sell..

but the same thing crossed my mind

Glass is much tougher than paint is. If anything, a glass polish would be more abrasive than a paint polish. But I don't know for sure. That's just my thinking on the subject.

I have used Zaino Z12 glass polish by hand on slightly water spotted car windshields and nasty shower glass with excellent results. It worked so well by hand, that I don't think a PC would be necessary.

CMA offers a 4" polishing pad and backing plate specifically for polishing glass with the PC. I have burned through one pad already. I used it on two cars with the Autoglym polish to remove water spotting. It was much faster and easier than doing it by hand.

Yeah I'll bet it was! I'm waiting till spring to try out my PC with the Autoglym. I tried removing some pretty bad water spots on a friend's car last summer and gave up for the time being. It was working, but it was just taking way too long.

The pad only lasted two cars?

Can you swirl glass? I mean, what if you stuck a pad on a rotary and went to work on the glass. I've seen kits for rotarys for polishing glass. I also think autoint suggests using a rotary for glass polishing in one of their things. My question is can you swirl glass?

This is what I was thinking about originally..

and then I thought I would come here and ask others to tell me what they think and do.. the best advice came from someone to use Autoglym.. not sure what that is but will find out.. also, someone suggested using an existing paint polish as it wouldnt be as abrasive.. hmmm maybe that will work too.. then I just wanted to find out if an existing polish would swirl the glass.. no answer to that one yet.. but this other comment on heat is more interesting yet.. not mentioned here though..

check out the link and the info...thanks

I have polished my windshield with the same yellow pad and Finesse-It that I use for paint polishing. The glass seems much clearer and the rain-sensor seems unaffected.

Intel,

You can't really "swirl" glass, but you can cause major problems. The polish and pad combo will "cut" the glass. Remove too much and it will destort the opitcs. The windshield will be like looking through a fish bowl.

I polished my windshield with a rotary buffer. I didn't use a cutting pad, I went with polishing only. I stayed at 1200 RPM's or less and used a nice even buffing pattern. I also used a super fine compound. The results were great, but you need to be really careful.

If you want more in depth stuff about polishing glass with a rotary feel free to PM me. :up

a glass installer told me too much heat can shatter factory tinted glass so if the glass is factory tinted I would not use the pc on it
Well, that should be alright then, because you'd have to work very hard to get a PC to create any appreciable amount of heat. :xyxthumbs Rotaries would be another story though...

I polish car windows using the following:

* Rotary buffer

* Yellow pad = hard pad

* Autoglym Car Glass Polish

Run the buffer at 700rpm-1000, the slower the better.

You do not want to create heat on the window, let the chemicals do the work, not the heat!

The result is a clean window, the polishing does remove the marks after wipers and other layers of dirt that a normal window cleaner won't remove.

The polishing does not remove scratches like you are used to on the cars paint. The glass is way to hard for this, but it gets cleaner.

Yes, I was hoping someone would chime in with an answer there too. Maybe you could call Griot's and ask if their glass polish is more or less abrasive than their paint polish.

I've used Medallion Premium Paint Cleaner and clay on windshields before (by hand) and they worked great. It got the glass very clean and smooth. It didn't leave any swirls.
