will a quick detailer scratch paint if dusty

I normally use, Meguires quick detailer every other day with mf towels to keep from having to wash the car every wk. Is this ok to do, or am i cuasing possible scratches. I try to only wash the car when it is really dusty or dirty, otherwise i try to quick detail to keep clean. Any thoughts, is this a good idea??

I use a California Duster prior to QD to remove all loose dust. I have never experienced any scratches.

I have heard that calif dusters are not good because they drag the dust around creating scratches, especially the dirtier the duster gets.

Perhaps Poorboys Spray & Wipe would be better in these circumstances. I know I always use it after I've taken my garage queen out for a quick spin with no scratching

I can't seem to QD/CCD without causing SOME micromarring (or worse). I know other people do it without problems, but I try to be as careful/gentle as humanly possible and I STILL get marring. So rather than continuing trying to master the QD/CCD (at the risk of more paint damage), I just don't touch my vehicles unless they're wet with wash solution.

Just take a look at your paint under harsh lighting and magnification, you'll see if your marring it.

Same here.

I just wash the vehicle and QD. I wash with QEW, so it's not a tedious task. I can't remember one time using CCD when it didn't cause marring, mirco-scratches, etc.

If you've got a black or dark color car...I'd really stay away from QD'ing or the CCD. I used to QD my black 745Li every other day, and learned the hard way. :(

Just not worth it to go back and polish the micro-scratches out.

:nixweiss I use QD and I CCD my black Audi, I see no obvious micromarring even under intense lighting

Same here. I was extremely careful, did OK for a while, and one time put nasty scratchs in my last car. The clean look was not worth the time it took to buff out scratches.

I think it really depends on where you live/drive/environment. Your results may vary. :nixweiss

I prefer a dusty car to a scratched car. My car is washed when I have time.

I will use QD to remove harmful stuff on the pain ASAP. I keep a bottle and a MF in my trunk. Takes care of a little bird poop or spilt gas when needed.

IMO, whether or not you can get away with CCD and QD for light dirt depends a lot on both the color of the car, and how scratch-resistant the paint is. There's probably no definitive answer.

I'm fortunate; I've used Spray & Wipe on my silver WRX for some unpleasant winter road films that I'm sure would make Autopian purists cringe, but the finish still looks good overall. Yes, I can see fine scratches in the clear, but because the silver on '02 WRXes is so damn bright, I'm the only one that really knows that they are there (and I can only see them in certain light). The scratches are fine enough that they don't detract from the silver "pop", and they polish out easily when I do my twice-annual full detail. For me, the convenience of using the CCD and QD for minor dirt outweighs the minor marring that I introduce on the finish. OTOH, with a different color or more scratch-prone paint, I might have torched my CCD long ago . . .

Bill D- Well, you're just superhumanly competent ;)

And remember how hard that Audi clear is.

Hey, if it's working for you, that's cool with me- Lucky you!

I will say I've QDed b/c vehicles when they were "spotless except for..." and that went OK. And I'll QD birdbombs from time to time. Still, I don't wanna risk having to polish out marring if I can help it.

Maybe it's just the nature of the stuff floating around my area.. :nixweiss Some of the marring I got was just incredible, considering the "barely touching the paint" way I did it, and that was with plenty of QD and my best MFs, too. The CCD just KILLED the Jag, and I was BARELY whisking the surface enough to disturb the dust on it. If I hadn't seen (let alone DONE!) it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.

Accumulator,

:o Jeez, thanks :o I'm surprised how much damage the CCD can do. It very well may be the hard Audi clear is saving me.

I've always liked those Jags like the one you have and now I'm cringing what their paint must look like:scared if they don't have owners like you.

Heh heh, as the owner of a silver '02 WRX...that'd drive me nuts.

J/K Tort ;) I prefer to do MY marring the old-fashioned way, with a BHB :D :o
