Why Detail?

Lately I've been thinking a lot about the car care industry, detailers, etc etc. It seems that most detailers do fine and make it by living a comfortable lifestyle. However... if you look at who is getting their cars detailed... its the millionaires (hey, look at Todd's clientele!).

So it brings up the question... why detail? Why not go for the gold, and make enough to afford a detail by somebody else!?

Now of course, if I was a millionaire, I would only let Todd touch my Ferrari's :cooleek: :bow :woot2:

I love the end result of a detail. Making something that is dull into a mirror is awesome. I also love the customers reaction, but still wouldn't do it for free.

Most wealthy people are themselves business owners. Although they may be currently wealthy, they had to start somewhere. In my case, detailing is the beginning of something bigger. Running my detailing company has taught me a lot about running a business in general. Those skills will be valuable when I decide to enter into other business ventures. Besides, in my opinion there is nothing like owning your own business and watching it grow through your own hard work.

As a future teacher....I'll use this analogy....

Why teach children when it pays nothing and you could just make a ton of money and have someone else do the teaching.

Because you love what you do......I'm sure that Todd absolutely loves his job and makes crazy good money to boot (well deserved I might add). If I was a millionare and had Ferrari's and Carrera GT's then I would still detail my own cars....why?....because I enjoy it.

Detailing for me is part time, and figure its a good job that i can have through the last year of HS and college because of the flexible hours.

:xyxthumbs I agree . Here in Cyprus most "detailers" (if i can call them like this) have very low service. The problem is they cannot see the difference between of just applying some compound or polish with a rotary polisher(sometimes with a modified grinder-YES THEY USE THEM A LOT) that fill the car holograms (because of the bad usage of rotary, same pad for months without clean it,same products for all kind of defects and paint types)and hide them with a wax or glaze until the next car wash, and of the real detailing work that gives to the car what really needed to.I had that experience on my own car, before i found out the magic world of detailing. When i bought it it was full of holograms because of bad rotary polishing. When i took it back to the dealer to repair it,he done the job in 30 minutes : ).A rotary polisher,a compound, and a paste wax.The results were worst than before.I tried to take it to another "professional" and i had the same results.I asked so many "pros" and they said that it was impossible to remove the swirls because the car is black : :shocked So i decided to fix it by my self and i would like to thank all of you that helped my on that :thx

Because of that situation i am starting now my own business on detailing.I have almost nothing experience but according to them i think i am good :LOLOL .After of repairing my car's and some friend's cars(the paint of the cars was really worst that mine), i am going to have my first customer today, a SAAB AERO CABRIO 9-3 (WISH ME GOOD LUCK :LOLOL ) and on Friday a Honda Inspire (the owner told me to give a try to repair it before paying much more money to repaint it,so you can imagine what hard job is waiting for me ).I would post some photos just to rate my job :nervous2: .The most important is to give to the customers a REAL service and seeing them smiling when they are going to pay you : )

I detail because the income can be tax free (cash in hand)

The main reason is because i get to work from home which down the track if i decide to have kids may come in handy being able to look after the kids at home while i detail or send off customers orders.

Eventually if i decide to do it full time you can write off a lot of fun car stuff as a tax deduction.
