Which polish would you use?

I got a one year old blue Jeep coming in Wed. for a detail and I need to get this up to autopian standard. The car has never been waxed. I need to pick a polish. The Jeep has been properly washed says the owner and I believe him since I didn't see any swirls. I bet they're the type that's only seen under flourescent. So which polish would you guys suggest? I'm gonna clay, polish, UPC and UPP the Jeep. I'm kind of leaning towards Meguiar's Swirl Free since it's I've seen the results Scottswax has with achieve with it.

I would reccomend Meg's swirl remover, since I have had great success with it, but judging from the Meg's catalog description and identical abrasiveness rating, I would say that the swirl free polish will probably do the same.

I've done cars with PPG final glaze 2000 and had fantastic results. Topped it with 3M liquid wax or malco flash wax.

Platinum may take care of it ....Doing it by hand or PC ?

Try a section and see what happens.....

I use 3M SMR, followed by VM, then Platinum.....The VM really cleans up the SMR, does an excellent job.....

The biggest problem with Autopia is there ultimately ends up being so many great suggestions (proven albeit), your left with one more decision !

Accumulator, does 3M PIII MG have any fillers?

As Andre' said, it's SUPPOSEDLY non-filling. Says so on the bottle and *I* haven't notice any fillers. But someone whose opinion I respect (maybe GeekySteve, I forget) thought maybe it DID :nixweiss Short answer: "probably not".

BTW, whenever I get the PI-III residue (that doesn't want to wipe off), I have better results BY FAR removing it with AIO instead of VM (or SRP or GEPC, tried 'em all). Surprised me, I was betting on the VM.

Thanks Accumulator. After looking at Deanski's Lexus, I went with the 3M PI-III MG. The PC didn't come in time for me to do the Jeep so I clayed, Meguiar's cleaner wax and Gold Class it. I had a satisfied customer so I can't complain. I did get a chance to do my Celica with 3M PI-III MG (applied by PC), UPC, and UPP. I didn't wash after the MG cause I figure the cleaners in UPC would take care of any bonding issues I might have. I could tell a difference with the MG. The paint look so much wetter. My best bud came over to confirm my opinions. She doesn't know jack about car care so I wanted her opinion. I'm finally satisfied with the look of my paint.

HilfigerCelica- Glad to hear (and SEE :xyxthumbs ) that it worked out for you. Another successful PI-III MG referral...

I'm guessing 3M PI-III MG is about as abrasive as 3M SMR but the 3M PI-III MG doesn't have fillers according to the bottle. That's why I chose the MG because I didn't want it to have bonding problems with Platinum or Zaino.

The 3M PIII-MG works very well for minor swirls on a finish. If a finish is loaded with swirls/defects, then I reach for the DACP, followed by 3M PIII-MG and Menzerna FP or Megs Machine glaze as a final ultra-fine polish/glaze prior to sealant. If I were to wax a finish, I then use 3M PIII-FG as it has carnuba in it to assist in really brining up a fine mirror finish prior to waxing it. Then I wax with Souveran or S100 or other high-end wax.

Once swirls are gone, then it's a matter of brining up the shine reflection, and that's done by using a very fine polish/glaze and I use a grey finish pad so ONLY the polish does the work and not the pad. More like applying it by hand only much faster and better results. I only work a small area to check the level of refectivity and if it's a marked improvement, I continue to the rest of the car.

Prepping a finish is where you get that mirror look, without the effort, wax just lays over it and gives a slight better look, but not what it could really be. This is more prevelent with Zaino or other sealants that need an absolutly clean, high-polished finish for them to have the effect they were designed for. Zaino will highlight ANY defects. Not sure on other sealants.

If Zaino or sealants are to be used, you MUST wash off all the oils from the polishes or glaze for it to bond. For Zaino, I wash with Dawn then Z7 after polishing/glazing prior to ZFX/new Z5. Spray with Z6 B4 and after each coat. You can see the results in my pic below and others I posted.

Regards,

Deanski
