I have recently got this scratch on my car. I think its from the metal tabs on jeans. I seriously think my car is bad luck.

I got that dent last time which I did get fixed and came out great but now this.

Can anyone tell me which pad to use with ScratchX to try and get this scratch out?

I have the wool compounding pad and white pads. Both from CMA. I was just wondering which I should go with. Of course I will polish after.

Thanks for the help. You guys are the best!

Have you tried using it by hand yet?? I don't know that you want to throw on a wool pad and try buzzing something like that out. Try using it by hand (the way ScratchX works best) and see what kind of results you get. If this scratch is deep enough to feel with your fingernail then you aren't going to get it buffed out with ScratchX.

Apply the scratchX to a towel and rub it in the direction of the scratch and see if that helps. I've had the best success with ScratchX using it by hand.

Sorry to Hijack this thread but.....

Which pad for a PC would be best for swirl remover from CMA. If you could give a link and part number id be in your debt. The swirls are not to major they are from about 3 years of waxing with cotton towels. Any help would be great.

The pad and product are relative to the damage you are trying to remove. There isn't a "swirl removing pad" or something like that. Its all relative. If you use a softer pad then you need to bump up the abrasive level on the product. If you use a more abrasive pad then you need to take the product down a few notches. All things are relative...

#9? If that is the case then you'd want to use a little harder of a pad. Meguiar's purple pad may be the ticket. #9 is pretty mild and will fill a lot of swirls. Kind of like 3M's SMR. I like #9 but if you are have major swirls then you'll need something stronger.

So what steps should I follow?

I'll go at it by hand. If that doesn't do it, could I go at it with the white CMA pad? And then a yellow pad maybe? And finally the wool?

Please advise.

Thanks.

You know, I personally don't like the idea of using a big-ish PC pad like that just to get rid of a scratch. I would still try to tackle that by hand if possible so you localize all the paint removal to just the problem.

FWIW, I have recently proven (to myself) what others have said: You can actually generate more heat and friction by hand than by PC. You just apply moderate to heavy pressure and really rub a small area rapidly.

I used SMR by hand on a small spot with plain foam waxing pad and rubbed heavily. The paint felt noticably pretty warm when I buffed it clean. Later on, I discovered this did a far better job of restoring that area than using DACP/polishing pad nearby!

I'm willing to bet that Scratch-X worked heavily with a terry cloth will be just as strong or stronger than when done by PC....

Yes/no anyone?

Yup. Lots and lots and lots of marring on the surface that would require another abrasive to remove. So in other words, more clear coat loss than necessary.
