which PC kit to get?

sorry for if it seems like rambling. i'm trying to work and do PC research at the same time. so i'm typing as i go along.

i've been doing nothing but reading up on how to operate a PC. i've searched through the threads and finally decided to get a PC in the near future.

however, i'm not sure of which kit to get. i was wondering if some of you guys could help me make a decision on which kit to get. these are the ones that i've been looking at so far:

Edge 2K

PC XL Pad Kit

Optimum PC Kit

another option would be to get one of the pad kits and then just buy the Optimum's separately. this way i can get the OP and the OHC instead of OC.

also, could anyone tell me the difference between OC and OHC? my understanding is that OHC has more of a cut to it. should i get both OHC and OC or should OHC be good enough to take care of my needs? and i also know that there is a new OHC formulation in the works. does it still only apply to rotarys for now or is it compatible with PC's as well?

or if anyone has any other suggestions of kits from other websites that seem as tempting, please chime in and let me know.

thanks in advance.

I'd go with one of the first two choices because you get more pads (you can use both sides of an Edge pad so 1 Edge pad = 2 normal pads).

Personally, I would try to find the best buy that you can on a PC (maybe at Lowes), and then pick up some pads (both 6.5" and 4"), backing plates (5" for the 6.5" pads and a 3.5" for the 4" pads), and the polishes of your choice.

If you like the idea of ordering everything at once in a kit then I'd go with the PC XL. The Edge kit would be fine, but I don't have experience with that system, although many members seem to like it. The Opt kit is OK, but you'll want more pads.

The old OHC had a bit more cut than OC, but I haven't tried the new OHC, and there haven't been too many reviews using it with a PC yet. What you'll need, cut wise, depends on the defects you're trying to remove. Danase, a forum sponsor, has a combo pack of all three Optimum polishes which would be save you some $$$ plus give you a chance to try all of them.

As much as i like danase, you only save about 1 dollar if you ship with them VS. autogeek... which may or may not be worth while, because then you are playing for shipping twice than if you got all three from autogeek + pads.

My rec. is the edge pad kit + optimum polishes from autogeek.

well, i have recently tried to see if i could take that route and purchase a 7336, but they don't carry it here for some reason. i've gone to a couple of different lowe's and home depot stores.

so i'm thinking my only other option would be to buy it online.

as far as the XL Kit and the Edge2K Kit. i've sat here and written it all down and this is what i've come up with. the benefit that i see of the Edge2K is that if you really think about it, i would be getting the equivalent of 2 more pads than the XL Kit because the Edge pads are 2-sided.

now my question is: If i do choose the Edge2K Kit, is there any difference in the way that you would use the pad as opposed to the regular pad with backing plate? more than likely i'm going to go with the Edge2K. still taking suggestions though.

happy buffing. . . .

optimum kit would be my choice, but like eliot said . . . you will want more pads . . . a man can never have to many pads . . .

well... good news today. i was digging through my dad's toolbox today trying to find some speaker wire. as i was looking in the bottom drawer, lo and behold, i found a Porter Cable 7336. of course i had to ask my dad if i could have it.

so now it looks like i just need to find a pad kit and compound and polish. that saved me a hundred bucks. haha

danase gives the 10% autopia discount on PCs, autogeeks only applies to everything BUT PCs.. :)

I would also suggest the XL... I bought the OP/OC one, and while I love it, I really wish I had more/different pads.

i dont need to buy a PC anymore... i found one in my dad's toolbox.

so now i just need to get a pad kit and compound and polish and other knick knacks...

i think i'm going to go with the Edge kit though. seems like the margin for error would be less with this as opposed to the LC pads.
