More aggressive Pad and Less aggressive Polish
Example - Yellow Cutting Pad with Poorboy SSR2

OR

More aggressive Polish and Less aggressive Pad
Example - Orange Light Cutting Pad with Poorboy SSR3

Basically - what is a bigger factor in the aggressiveness? Is it the pad or the polish used?

Most of the time I think pad choice is the factor with aggressiveness since they are always abrasive. Most polishes use diminishing abrasives so it is strong cut and then works its way down to a finer polish as you work it in.

Cutting pad and SSR2 does not = SSR3 with any pad. SSR3 is some strong stuff :)

Light cut and SSR2 is more along the lines of SSR2.5 with a polishing pad. It's really hard to tell for sure though. I don't use anything but polishing pads with all SSRs, so I choose a step up in product SSR2 to SSR2.5 rather than switching pads.

like budman I usually will choose the polishing pad and change the aggressiveness by changing product. One thing to consider also is that not all products can be used with aggressive pads without a side affect of micro-marring(hazing). For instance the SSR's having diminishing abrasives, as the product breaks down to a fine polish, the pad can continue cutting. Such would be the case of using a yellow or green pad with SSR1 or SSR2. Another extreme would be using SSR3 with a cutting pad. Too much cutting ability and not enough polish going on. Fine to start with for a junkyard finish, but on a fair to decent clearcoat all you will see is a haze. With the SSR3, I would use a polish pad and let the product do the work not the pad. SSR2.5 I actually do like with the orange light cutting pad as it seems to often be a great combo for most circumstances, but sometimes, especially on dark colors or black, will need to be followed with a polishing pad and then SSR1 with a finishing pad. whew..that was a mouth full :D
