When to use WW MF towels???

I've exhausted my search efforts and was hoping that someone could either explain to me, or provide me with a link that explains, the purpose of using waffle weave micro-fiber towels over say 100% cotton or regular MF, as well as what applications they are best used for (i.e. drying, applying wax, removing was, etc.)? Thanks in advance.

The WW towels that I have I use for drying my vehicle. Some have suggested a blotting method dabbing the paint surface gently absorbing the water in the area. This is supposed to help eliminate possible marring.

I use the swipe method by placing the entire WW towel on the surface of the paint. Grabbing the corners of the towel and gently pulling the towel towards me. I continue pulling until the towel comes off the surface of the vehicle. I usually start on the roof. I use a ladder to reach al the way across the vehicle. Then I move across the top until the roof is done. I do the hood next. Using the same procedure. Then on to the tonneau cover. By this time I usually wring out the towel, unless I am using the guzzler from AutoGeek. After I have completed the horizontal surfaces I fold the towel into quarters and wipe the vertical surfaces starting at the top and wiping in a downward motion. I use as light a touch as is possible. I try not to do the rocker panels until last because sometimes I miss all the dirt and grime.(I know proper wash techniques should eliminate that ..right) I am just being honest. That way if I do miss an area I am not as likely to marr the finish.

After I have finished the WW wipedown I start all over by lightly spraying a QD over the surface. Then use another WW towels to wipe the product away. Then wipe again using a plush MF towel to dry the area completely without any water spotting what so ever.

My WW towels hold more water that the regular MF towels. I have found that they can be wrung out and still work effectively.

I don't know if this is a long explanation but the WW design is for picking up water in large amounts....I use mine to dry the car and also with PB S&W applications....As for cotton the WW is softer and will pickup allot more water with one towel than cotton, and will not leave any lint residue on the car as some cotton towels will...you can use a WW for removing wax residue, but I like a more plush towel for that...The ones that I like are Poorboys but there are quite a few available threw the sponsors here....

I think most people use the WW to dry their vehicle. To this day, I am not overly impressed with any of the WW I have had the opportunity to use. I mean, they work okay, but not any better than a regular MF drying towel. The one thing I do think they do better for me is drying/cleaning windows.

JP (if I can call you that:) )

I brought MF towels from my local detail supplier and we have a real good one here....I was never impressed over them and couldn't for the life of me see what everyone was ratting over....One day I was talking with Steve @ PB about them and he said you need a better quality...OK...Then on my order send me what you think are what I should have to start...I got a plush blue for windows, big WW towel fro drying and some yellow seconds for cleaning inside and the likes....I'm old school detail and had a very, very large collection of cotton towels and honestly felt those where about as good as they get....I have about 10 left now...I have switched over to all MF and could not be happier about it...Quality Quality Quality in MF towels IMO is what I think really separates the experience you get from usiung them

Haha, you can call me JP. :) Thanks for the insight. I've got go get some things for this summer at some point, so maybe some of the WW you are talking about might be in order. To be fair, I guess I have been ruined by the big blue MF towel I got from PAC (back when it was Dwayne's PAC). That thing has me spoiled. I do have the Meguiar's Water Magnet, which is a WW, and it does a nice job, especially for drying glass (which I think I mentioned earlier ???). Anyways, thanks for the comments.

no biggie like I said I had the brakes on them until Steve sent me his....I will go as far to say that for detailing the darker color cars they have, hands down improved the smudge free finish for me....its really a night and day difference on the car...cotton tend to collect the wax residue then that seems to sit up the surface of the towel and smear the car surface....even when you are turning allot....I don't get that with the MF

Thanks guys...I really appreciate the detailed explanations. Cwcad, I saw the poll/thread about blotting vs. swiping and it was in interesting read.

I currently have a Big Blue (actually mine is the smaller version) that I ordered from ProperAutocare.com about a year ago. I have been using that and like it but was just curious as to what/if any alternatives I should be considering. The reason I asked about the waffle weave was because in the kit that I ordered from them I also received quite a few, what I guess most would consider, standard microfiber towels. I imagine that most of those are for interior use and applying/removing wax.

Thanks again.

They work great for me on cleaning glass. I cut up an old one and I use it for windows and interior dressings. I just recently got some 16x24 inch white ones from Walmart that I'm now usong for my glass, and so far they work better then anything else that I've used for that purpose. Of course I use them for drying also.

I'm having trouble understanging MF naps. Let say you have a MF towel for product removal. I fold it in quarters. Now I have read where some people say that you have 8 sides for removal. That what is the purpose of the long nap on one side and the short nap on the other.

It's not as simple as plusher versus less plush. However, in general I use plush towels with heavier/wetter products and less plush towels with thinner/drier products. Less plush towels will also often work better on glass with plusher towels being more useful on paint.

If you want a more long winded explanation, you can try wading through an old post of mine in this thread (see post #20) -
