When clay is not enough...

Hey,

I've got the Edge buffing kit and some optimum on the way via UPS, so I'm in the process of getting the bulk of the paint prep done so I'm ready to fix the swirls that I've got all over my paint. But man, some of this stuff just won't budge! So far I've tried clay (Megs Quik Clay) and 3M Adhesive and Wax remover, but nothing will take it off. It actually feels smooth, but it's still completely dirty. Maybe the stuff is embedded in the paint? I dunno. This is 8 years worth of dirt. Here are some pics:

It doesn't look too bad but I just can't seem to get it off. Am I going to have to wetsand/compound this area?

Also note, those pictures were taken a week after I attempted to clean those areas, so there is some loose stuff on there as well, although if I were to clean them now with clay/3m it wouldn't look that much different.

Thanks

Ok, here are some updates, I got rid of the horrible raildust problem, but there is still some stuff I just can't get off. These pics don't really show it but I'll get some that do. I'm pretty happy so far with the results I got from the megs clay and some mineral spirits. I also found out that mineral spirits melts clay lol.

great job! that car cleaned up nice :bigups so what ended up working for you?

Thanks!

I finally got most of the stuff off with a combination of mineral spirits and clay, but what really got it going the most was the fact that I learned something new... In order to be effective with clay you have to push really hard! For some parts of the paint like the roof and hood pushing hard isn't as needed so I think I had always figured that was how it was for all of the paint, but now I know that's not the case, lol. I'm going to do the other side of the car today and I'll try to get pics of the rail dust that is on that side of beforehand, it's pretty nasty. I don’t know if it's because my car was built in Canada and shipped by train or if it's rotor dust, but it was all over, and bright orange!

There's still some stuff here and there that I might need a plastic razorblade for, or let the mineral spirits dwell for an hour or so, but so far I'm really happy with the results.

I wonder how an aggressive clay would work  You'd have to polish out the marring from it, but it might be a better solution overall :nixweiss Sure looks good though, so it's not like what you're doing now isn't OK.
