wheel question

i got a set of wheels from a guy and he didnt take very good care of them on the inside and it caused the clear on the inside to blister a little. is there anyway to fix this so its not as bad or is it something that i just have to live with?

Well, there's really nothing you can do at home other than lightly sand the edges to prevent it from spreading, but that's about it.

Now, it can be fixed. Look through your local telephone book for wheel repair companies and start calling around for prices. You'd be amazed at how good they can make a beat up wheel look.

the outside looks great, he was just too lazy to take them off to get the brake dust from the inside. i dont know how many people i see do the same thing. i tell them that the brake dust is caustic and they are like "oh well"

i have a friend with a 2004 Commemorative Edition Z06 and he refuses to take the wheels off to clean behind there. i think it really brings the look down of the car. you spend all day waxing it and then leave that behind.

theres a couple of good wheel shops around here, maybe i will call and see what they can do.

evil_c5 Idon't know how bad the inside of the wheels are but I've rescued some pretty beat up wheel surface using this method-

Repairing Scratched Wheels:

This procedure is for slight damage only; a specialist wheel repair shop should repair serious damage.

â€Â¢Remove the damaged wheel from vehicle.

â€Â¢Clean the damaged area with Prepsol and then sand the scratched or damaged area with Norton 3X Sandpaper (p-graded aluminium oxide grain,) 60, 80 or 100 grit sand paper, sand wet or dry with a wooden sanding block.

â€Â¢Sand the wheels until you've removed the scratches or `kerbing' marks.

â€Â¢Continue the sanding process using finer and finer grades of paper, 220 or 320 grit and finally with 500-grit paper.

â€Â¢For small hard to reach places use a Dremel tool and a suitable sanding bit

Repainting Wheel Surface:

â€Â¢Prepare the surface by removing all sandpaper residues by washing and then wiping with a clean damp towel.

â€Â¢Use 3m Painters Masking Tape between the tyre and the wheel rim

â€Â¢Spray the wheels with Dupont Prep Sol and allow to air dry.

â€Â¢Apply a thin coat of zinc (Groit's 20225) to stabilize the surface.

â€Â¢Paint the wheels with two thin coats of silver alloy paint (Griot's Garage P/N 20225) to ensure complete coverage, and allow air-drying (1-2 hours between coats and leave to cure overnight.

â€Â¢Finish with a clear lacquer paint (Griot's Garage P/N 11570) allow to air-dry and then cure for 4-6 hours

the problem is on the inside, its small blisters where the brake dust has eaten into the wheel in the early stages.

i will try sanding it down some and maybe spray it with some silver coating.

regardless of how clean your car is, you will most likely always have brake dust on the inner wheel. I cleaned mine a while back and now theyre dirty again. I havent found anything that will keep the brake dust from sticking.

6']['9- try multiple layers of SG. Since I started using it for this, I can keep the accessible areas on the backs clean with just carwash shampoo,. When I do pull them off, even the previously *inaccessible* areas clean up quite easily. BF and UPP seem to work well for this too, but I've only tried those on the pampered S8 so I dunno about a daily driver.

evil_c5- If you don't want to have them redone, and you don't want to try TOGWT's excellent suggestion (i.e., if the blistered areas don't really show much), you can try what I've done in similar cases:

Use a polish (I use 3M PI-III RC then MG) to clean and smooth the blistered areas a little. *Maybe* try some very fine wetsanding, but I never bothered and I'd rather have the extra paint/clear on there. Then just use the Klasse twins with many layers of SG. It's surprising how well this arrests the damage. I have damaged areas that've done OK with this method for many years.

While I'll agree nothing will completely avoid brake dust adherence, ZoopSeal comes very, very close, but the initial cost for the kit is expensive. (what price do put on having to clean brake dust?)

if im gonna have to spend a bunch of money on them, i will just get new wheels and sell these to someone that the insides dont matter to.

i usually take the wheels off every couple of weeks and wipe the insides out so this doesnt happen.

Heh heh, if I were in your shoes I'd use those for track wheels. But then if I were in your shoes I'd probably still have my C5, huh?
