Wheel Cleaning..How would you?

Hey guys,

How would you go about cleaning this rusty looking spots on wheels? I'm looking at a set of Fikse FM10s for my M3 and they just have a little discoloring. (Don't mind the little cuts, I'm getting them professionally fixed)

Thanks,

it looks like a steel washer on the valve stem

and just some rust on the surface from that washer

should come off easy

if they are getting professionally fixed

why would they not fix that also?

Believe it or not, diluted muratic acid always works for me on bad rims. Just dilute it 10:1 in a spray bottle and wear rubber gloves. Spray it on a microfiber and then rub the stained areas and it will get the stains off. Remember to rince the rims off with water immediately and when mixing the acid and water pour the water in first and then pour the acid into the water.

Good luck!

Thanks guys. Muratic acid is just Hydrochloric acid, right?

And I planned to clean the wheels before I give the one that needs repair to the company.

Actually, it is spelled 'muriatic' and yes, that means hydrochloric acid. It removes rust from steel. Steel makers use a concentrated form of hydrochloric acid to pickle steel before it is galvanized.

Sounds good. I'll go to a nearby hardward store and ask for some muriatic acid. Do you guys know if pep boys, home depot, or lowes might have it?

Yes, I know Lowes stocks muriatic acid. It is also used to clean up bricks and concrete, so it may be in that section.

Cool. So just dilute it in a water bottle and spray it on the wheel and rinse with regular water? Do I need to scrub it with anything or is a microfiber towel enough..

Microfiber is enough, you'll be amazed! Hydrochloric acid is what Muriatic acid is called when you add it to water.

I get mine from Home Depot, they keep it in the garden center, outside. It will come in a box with 2, 1 gallon jugs of it for about $11.00.
