What's wrong with my wheelwells? :(

I have to say that I've never seen that before. have you tried cleaning them with an APC and a good tire brush?

That is weird. I'm interested if anyone can shed some light on what happened there. Did it look like that when you bought it? It almost looked at first like that pattern is from the tire contacting the wheelwells but the tread blocks look bigger than that. :nixweiss

That doesn't look like a molded plastic well, looks like some formed mastic compound...I'd say that pattern is in the sheet material used to form the well.

Is that a F-150? My dad's F-150 has the same thing though not as bad as yours. I think it is from the manufacturing process.

Gotta be a Ford. I just detailed an F-150 and it had the same exact pattern. Saw pics of a Mustang wheel well today...exact same pattern. Just a Ford characteristic. I did the same thing though. Dressed wheel wells after scrubbing with Simple Green solution (when clean the wheel well showed the pattern more), and it looked fine. I'd say in Ford country that is normal.

I'll have to look at the wheelwells of a ZX2 I'm going to test drive tomorrow. I can't help but be interested... it's a 2K2 5spd with 32,000 miles for $5K! I'll report back tomorrow about whether the wheelwells have that pattern.

Ah,.. good to hear it's not just mine. I assumed that somehow it was because of me bottoming out onto my tires or something, but my current GTII's dont match, and I'm pretty sure the original General Grabbers didn't.

White95- My sister used to own a '99 ZX2 and I don't really know if it was because of her, but the car sorta began falling apart around 2003 or so. As far as gas mileage and comfort go, it's a great car, but not really Ford's best work. For $5,000 though, it would be a great little car to buzz around the city in. Peppy little engine and overall low maint. costs.

That's sound deadener. The waffling helps cancel out sound waves. It must work if they bother with the extra step when they build the car.

I can't imagine that waffling pattern behind the wheel well cover would do much sound deadening. I would think that the waffling might be to strengthen the plastic itself.

There's no texture to this, it's in the plastic. They are smooth. I'd bet that those parts are formed when warm, and the "textured" look is where the form touches the plastic.

Right. The F-150 I detailed simply had the pattern, nothing you could actually touch unless it was on the back side. However, I agree that it is probably a byproduct of the manufacturing process.

I just got back from test driving a 2K2 5spd ZX2. My opinions are in a new thread in the Car And Driver forum if you're interested.

Sorry I forgot to check the wheelwell pattern on it but it sounds like most of the other Ford owners have that pattern too.
