Well the topic says it all but I wanted to know,

Whats the average # of Ounces of Polish needed to do a full complete mid-size car ?

I'm talking about a moderatly swirled car and not a brand new car that has little or no swirling.? :nixweiss

Well, I bought a bunch of little 2oz. bottles to put my polishes in since they are easier to deal with vs. the big bottles they come in and I've never had to refill one during a detail. I think 1 oz. should be enough for a mid sized car, 2oz. at the absolute most.

Only two oz. of Polish to do a whole car??? Wow, that'll be really good for me JD., So with a 16 oz. bottle of SSR 2.5 I can do up to eight sedan sized cars?

I thought i'd have to apply like 1 oz of polish on the pad each time I'd polish a 2x2 foot area.

Please clarify, thanx.

The biggest mistake most people make is using too much product. More is not better in this situation. Like Setec said, 1 to 2 oz. per vehicle.

Ok, like look at this pic of the Polish on the Pad, I thought that this amount is about 1 Oz. of polish on that blue pad. :nervous2: is there too much polish on this pad??

I was told that in respect to Wax, yes, a little goes along way. However, In regards to Polish, I read somewher that its ok to be liberall.

Can anyone post a pic with how much polish I should be put on a pad?

It's ok to be liberal...it's just that you can get more splatter, more gumming on the pad, harder to remove, maybe not break down the polish all the way, etc. That picture may show what's required to get the pad primed, you shouldn't need that much the second time. Anyway...you can use more if you want, but you shouldn't NEED more than 1-2 oz, unless you're going over and over it.

Yeah, once you get the pad primed (if you rubbed that product in the pic into the pad it woudn't look very loaded up at all ;) ) you only need to add more product for one of two reasons- a) you need more product so you have enough to work the area/don't buff dry and/or b) you need fresh, *not broken down* product on the pad for it to do it's abrasive thing. Regarding this second point, it can pay to clean old, product that *has* broken down off the pad from time to time with a toothbrush or by washing the pad out or getting a fresh one.

but you shouldn't NEED more than 1-2 oz, unless you're going over and over it.

Is that 1-2 oz. per whole vehicle?

Ok, I'm really really sorry :hide: , but its just so hard for me to beleieve that i can do the whole vehicle with just 2 oz.

So affter i liberally prime the pad, following applications of a new 2x2 foot area need only like a quarter size drop of product (polish)??

BTW, I'll be using a rotary so do they require more product than a PC.

Thanx for all the clarification and help. :help:

Maybe not even that big. I usually use about two dime sized drops on the pad, and that is plenty once the pad is primed. It really takes very little polish once the pad is primed. With the PB SSR's, this easily covers a 2x2 area and you can work it for 3-5 minutes no problem. I dont know about the rotary, but I would imagine it wouldnt use much if any more polish.

The rotary will require more polish. The heat generation causes the SSRs to flash rather quickly. Yesterday, using SSR 2, I went through ~ 4 oz. I did 3 passes on the trink lid and 1 pass everywhere else. I was working in moderate sun when polishing the trunk and, lemme' tell ya', the SSRs are not as sun friendly as everyone makes them out to be when working with the rotary.

The rotary definitely allows the product to breakdown faster. You will notice this as soon as you get started.

mystickid- With the rotary (and the probable follow-up by PC) you probably *will* use more product than that but you sure won't use a whole bottle of product on one or even three or four details. I've never paid much attention to how long a bottle of polish lasts, but a quart of PI-III RC/MG lasts me for many polishings and all our vehicles are pretty big. Seems like I always think "gee, I'm getting low, better order more" and then the new bottle just sits on the shelf forever because I don't run out that fast after all.

Accumulator thanx,

It's just that i was worried because i shall be detailing my car for the first time this Sunday and i only ordered a 16. oz. bottle of SSR 2.5. I was worried that I'd run out and be stuck with the elements becasue I don't have a garage and it's said to rain here on Monday. i wanna finish the whole car completely polished and sealed before I release it out to the weather.

Fortunately my firend is letteing me come to his garage to do the detail.

Thanx everyone for the great advice. :bestwish:

Nope, even if you knock the bottle over and spill it :D you'll be fine for a good number of polishing sessions.

I use rotary primary. I think I used more than 2 oz. If you lay a bead of 6" compound in over 10 panels, thats more than 2 oz, I bet. :nixweiss So, I probably used like 4oz.

I think it would help to have pictures.

I fear that i'm using to much product as well.

Usually when im done working a panel, i'll do an "x" on the pad. To much i take it?

Yes, I agree, if someone has a Digital camera & can post a pic of how much polish should be on the pad once the pad has *already* been primed, that'd be such an enormous help for me and others.

Thanx
