What's special about detailing clay?

Is there a difference between the modeling clay that crafts people use and detailing clay. Could modeling clay be used to detail a car?.....just curious.

I wondered the same thing for a while. I don't think modeling clay hs the right consistency as detailing clay to do the same job.

Not positive though :nixweiss

They seem similar, except modeling clay doesn't have the abrasive cutting particles in it to "shear" off the contaminants. To my knowledge, that is how detailing clay works. It would be interesting to heat some modeling clay and mix in some baking soda or corn starch to act as the abrasive. Apparently they used to be used as mild abrasives.

Great link, Alfisti. I definitely have to side with forrest's comments. Detailing clay is pretty inexensive compared to a repaint required after experimenting.

Thanks Scott.

Forrest is spot on. Besides, here in Australia, while detailing clay is much more expensive than in the US (I get it from the US anyway), so is BluTac.
