What to wash with?

For washing, before I knew much about good car care I used a regular cheap sponge. Then I went to microfiber cloths and used those for a while. Now I usually use a microfiber mitt or sponge covered with microfiber.

My questions are:
What do people use?
What is the least likely to cause marring? cloth, sponge or mitt?

This is how i start, first i get my two buckets with grit-guards to use the two bucket method. I use the ardex wash and wax soap, with a very soft micro fiber cloth that i use only for washing. This system has worked good for me for a while.

I use a couple different microfiber wash tools.

1. Cobra Bone: A Bone-shaped microfiber sponge
2. Std. Microfiber Dread lock style Wash Mitt
3. All White Wash ShMITT: Soft Convoluted Foam like the Edge 2000 buffing pads. (I am currently testing these. I don't usually like a straight sponge. So far though after about 4 washes I really like it.)

I have yet to use this but really want to try it.
4. Dodo Juice Supernatural Wash Mitt "Yeti's Fist" / Or any quality Sheepskin wash mitt

I currently use the Meguiars Microfiber Wash Mitt along with Turtle Wax Ice Soap.

Does anybody with black cars use a brush that's advertised by online vendors? If so, how's that work for you?

I used to like using a cloth too but from what I have read on this forum it seems like most people use a dread lock type mitt. From reading on here it seems like a cloth might hold dirt and scrape it on the surface and the dread lock type ones keep the dirt away from the surface. Do you find that you get swirl marks with the cloth if the car is too dirty?

I keep going back to the wool wash mitt. It seems easy to control pressure on paint, picks up lots of suds (the dreadlock style mf does not), rinses fine, not very heavy, and easy to handle on contours and around door pulls.

I have a wool wash mitt that is new. I may try it out next wash cycle.

I think it was a $20 wash mitt so hopefully it's a good one.

I use either the Uber yellow wash sponge or the DI grout sponge with much success. I tried many MF mitts and sheepskin but never found anything I truly like until these two. My choice was made up by the follwoing factors: cost : length of use, softness, and retention of the wash media.

I'm currently testing out a boar's hair brush. It does not seem like it would be able to trap debris and cause swirls. So far, so good. But if a car was really dirty, it might almost be too gentle, though my car rarely gets to that point.

currently I am power washing first then mixing up 2 gallons of DP Rinseless Wash & Gloss and washing with a Poorboy's World "DMT" IMO the softest towel on the planet.

I use the microfiber mitt(dreadlocks) form Poorboy's most of the time. A wool mitt is my other choice.:passout:

I've used a bunch of different things. I've used regular MF sponges, dreadlock style, Lake Country blue grout sponge, microfiber towels, wool mitts, brushes... If you know what you're doing and you're careful, you can make most of them work pretty safely. It's more important to find something that is well made. I currently am using and liking the orange Poorboy's dreadlock mitt but I've also used some that were horrible. I've used some sponges that weren't very good but I liked the LC blue grout sponge. It just would get caught on things and the blocks would pull off. Brushes are real hit or miss. They're either too soft to clean well or too stiff to really be safe. My tried and true fall back is the SM Arnold wool wash mitt. It's always been great for me, rinses pretty clean, holds up fairly well. The PB mitt just does all that a little better.

I bought one a few years ago when I had the black 530.
Never had the guts to try it.

I ust the PB dreadlock mitt, sometimes a sea sponge.
Have the bone, brush and blue grout sponge - havent used em.

hey guys,

how do you guys car for the MF towels? Do you just machines wash them? I want to get the Poorboy towels, but there's so much to choose from. I don't even know which one I use for what.

thanks
