What polishes for my arsenal?

6cyl's_of_fury

its naturally curly......
Currently my polish arsenal is quite limited, consisting of the two Menzerna's ( IP and FP ). If I was to consider doing detailing for extra cash on weekends, what else should I add to my range to cover the majority of situations? Or is the IP and FP enough?

TIA

I like:

Meguiars #83 Dual Action Cleaner Polish

#82 SwirlFree Polish

#81 Hand Polish

I think Scottwax wrote it best when he said that these will cover about 95% of the jobs you'll run into.

Hope this helps.

I don't use the Menzerna products so I can't say where they fall in the general scheme of things.

You need polishes that can cover most of the situations you could experience. Some work best by machine, some by hand. The Scottwax comparo is rather limited because he does all his work by hand and details mostly high end cars in good to excellent condition and with top notch paint jobs. If you are going to detail any car that comes your way you'll need a wide variety of polishes.

You're gonna need something like a Medium Cut Cleaner for the really bad jobs. A couple "intermediate" polishes like Meguiars DACP or Einszett Paint Polish which you will use most often. Then a couple finer polishes for soft paint or light polishing. Swirl Mark Removers, hand polishes, stuff like that are good light polish choices. So, you're looking at a mix of 5 or 6 different products, from mild to wild.

I concur. :up

Bret-I've polished more than my fair share of turds in my day! When I first started out, probably only 60% of the vehicles I was doing had clearcoats. Now it is probably 95%! vmunoz is right that DACP, SFP and HP is more than adequate for the vast majority of the vehicles you will come across.

I do agree though that at least one product more aggressive than DACP should be part of your polish inventory. I'd also add a glaze like Vanilla Moose, GEPC/SEC or Poorboy's PwC to add even more pop prior to sealing the paint....which makes 5-6 products, just like you said! :up

I've got Diamond Cut, Blue Moose (a yet unreleased compound Clearkote makes-quite aggressive!) Scratch X, DACP, SFP, HP, Vanilla Moose, PwC and AIO.

That's cool. For me your selection is too narrow. I like a wider variety. If DACP was the most aggressive product I had I'd be in trouble on some cars. And that's with using DACP with a rotary and PC.

I have Meguiars Fine Cut Cleaner, DACP, #9 SMR, #82 SF, Ardex Medium Cut Compound, Vanilla Moose, Carnauba Moose, Klasse Twins, S100 Wax, Poorboys EX, and Poorboys Polish w/Carnauba.

Interesting , professional thread.

A pro does need (read Must Have) something with more cutting power than a DACP type product.

Me? I reach for a heavy cutter like Malco's True Grit with a wool pad on the rotatry. There are many other options.

I keep Medium Cut Cleaner, DACP, SFP, Hand Polish, Menzerna IP and FP, SSR3, SSR2, SSR1, 3M PI-III MG, Speed Glaze, VM, Compound Cleaner, AIO, Show Car Glaze, and Blue Moose with me when I go on a job. I haven't found any situation that I can't handle so far.
