What pads to use? Steel wool?

Just kidding about steel wool :D... BUT I was about to buy a PC 7424 and was wondering what pads(colors/brands) I would need?

I will be using it to remove scratches/swirls, polishing and waxing.

If possible let me know what color or what type is used for what.

TIA!

If I were you, I'd buy a full Lake Country set from one of the vendors. It'll come with a light cutting pad to take stuff out, a polishing pad (yeah, you guessed it) and a finishing (wax) pad. A lot of companies make very good pads, but LC is the best, IMHO.

P.S. if you use a one step wax, use it with the polishing, not the finishing pad. NXT, for example.

Lake Country makes good pads, some of the best, that's their thing. Meg's are OK to, much better than they used to be. Buy a few because you don't want to mix products on the same pad and mark the pads so you don't mix pads on another day. You may need one for your heavy duty polish, one for light polish, one for applying wax, etc... Depends on how many steps you do. And it's best to buy the kit with the velcro backing plate and pads because it's usually cheaper. As for color, every brand has different color coding, the packaging will tell you what it's for.

As for where to buy, if you want instant gratification, look for auto paint supply stores in the yellow pages, most carry Lake Country as many pro's use that or Meguiars because of the huge variety of products they have so they likely have the pads too. While you are there they will likely have Meguiars and 3M polishes, the most popular and been around the longest and they may have Malco which I personally have used the most.

Good luck and post some pics on your first detail...

Thanks for the replies guys! Also do you have a link to vendors? When I check site sponsors, the page is blank for me... I seen them on the autopia carcare site, is there a link to anyone selling a set like you mentioned?

Oh also, correct me if wrong...

Yellow = Cutting

White = Polishing

Orange = heavy cutting?

Anyone I missed? Also with the PC 7424, will I have to buy velcro backing plates and so?
