any idea what it is? u can't feel them with your fingers
 
Mid-late '90s s-10's and sonoma's seems to have problems with it.

I had a guy come by the shop today with a 90's black dakota. It had a bra on the hood that scratched and marred from rubbing and he wanted it polished. When i had a closer look it was pretty bad but should be able to improve greatly. Also on closer look the hood was 2 or 3 times as bad as Dakmis posted. The damage was only under the bra. I am thinking it is from silicone drift, from whatever product was used on the bra. (he just bought the truck) so he does not know.
 
I have seen that "checked" appearance several times on old SS paint...including a couple that I have owned; an indication that there is not much paint left, IMO.

Clear Coat Cracks:

The cracks created could penetrate the clear through to the colour coat (base) this condition cannot be corrected by buffing or levelling the surface, it requires refinishing of the paint system by a body shop, and is due to the results of water permeating the paint in a localized area, along with high temperatures causing the clear coat to expand. Acids enter the breach formed in the clear coat and attack the resin (oils) binder system.

You can minimize it but you can't get rid of it. Here's a couple pics of my beater Explorer that has the same type of cc failure on the hood.

As you can see, it's still there but it definitely minimized and on certain angles you could just barely see it all anymore. Like this:

Not long after I originally posted the pics of this particular detail, another member posted some before and after pics of a black Explorer with the same exact cc failure and he was able to hide 90% of the cracks with a rotary. My work was done by PC, but since I don't have anything to lose (and I just bought a rotary) I am going to try to polish them down some more with a rotary this time. Regardless, the hood needs to be repainted so I can't mess it up.
