what does it take to be a pro?

I was wondering what it takes to be hired by a professional detailing shop? Do you need a degree or certificate in auto body, or is there specific courses in auto detailing? I have been detailing my own cars and those of friends and co-workers for quite a while. Short of using a rotary, I've used most techniques and equipment. What kinds of things do shops look for when hiring a detailer? Is this the type of skill learned on the job, or do you have to bring it to the table with you? Thanks for your help. I thought I would ask the pros on this site, you guys sure know your stuff!!!!

I look for people that are smart & respectful.

I tend to hire people that reall dont know much about detailing, this way they have no old bad habitis. I train them to the way i want them.

Shops vary in what they want - like NY Detailer said, smart & respectful will help you land ANY job, not just detailing.

some will want you to be experienced, some will want you to not be experienced - but being enthusiastic about it will be a plus.

Exactly. I have had 2 guys in 10 years that have "experience" that could do a half decent job to my expectations. I prefer not to have to break bad habits etc.. and deal with the BS that comes with someone who thinks they know it all already as many "experienced" detailers do. I look for 1. a great attitude 2. a strong work ethic and commitment to doing a great job 3. talent

You may notice that talent was last on my list. I have have many fine detailers work for me with a lousy attitude or poor work habits that made my life hell and will settle for an enthusiastic worker who may take a little longer to attain the skills because they make it worth coming to work in the morning. Just my 2 cents.

What does it take to be a pro?

1. A willingness to rub a lot.

2. Enjoys being wet.

3. Likes being yelled at.

4. Is short enough to take naps in the back seat.

5. Has some business cards.

:)

Sorry guys.....I tried and I could NOT resist!! I hope I've been here long enough that you know me and I'll not offend with my smart-*** remarks!

Thank you all for the help. I will look into it further with some shops in my area. The advice means a lot coming from you pros. Thanks again.
