What do you guys use to stop algae growth?

You are going to laugh at me. Rotten mulch... I recovered a whole anoxic pond as a volunteer for the Colorado Wildlife Division using it.

Now, big water bodies aside, I'm not sure in a water tank. Being a biologist, I know there are a few things plants need in order to grow; sunlight, nutrients, CO2, O2, and water. You can't really remove the dissolved CO2 or O2 or the water in a cheap way. You are left with either blocking light from reaching it or do something about the nutrient in the water. Are you using tap water? Using filtered/deionized/distilled water makes a huge difference. Can you paint the tank? That should reduce the amount of sunlight it gets. If not, try calling a fish tank store and ask what they do for it. There should a product to inhibit growth.

What about a few drops of vegetable oil? If the surface tension of the water wasn't normal, maybe that would prevent algae growth?

I don't know if that would do anything since it would not cover the whole surface. Maybe a few drops of Chlorine?

Think of your water tank as a hot tub.

Buy chemicals that are appropriate to pool and spa use.

Muratic acid will be an option.

Just do lots of volume and the issue will be eliminated.

Wouldn't putting something like chlorine or muriatic acid have an effect on the water itself though? Obviously putting chlorine in the water would kill the algae, but won't it have an adverse effect when used on the cars?

The only suggestion that I can think of is to drain your tank frequently, and flush it often. If you don't keep water in the tank very long, it won't have the full opportunity to grow anything.
