What did I do wrong?

I have an 05 titanium metallic car and I got a great wet shine on it using my PC and some CG wax products + wet gloss polish + sealer. From a few feet away it looks totally wet and shiny.

Problem is that when you stand over the hood the reflection of the sky and trees are "ripple" looking (more like out of focus)...I was expecting them to be more of a crisp reflection...

Is it my metallic paint or should I do something different??

"Ripple", orange peel maybe? Did you notice this before you polished and waxed the car, or only after?

sounds like orange peel. im pretty sure its explained in the Guide to Detailing section. what kind of car is it? many cars come from the factory standard with orange peel and some are worse than others

Porsche Cayenne. I don't think I am describing it correctly when I say ripple. It is not orange peel.

The reflection looks wavy and distorted however wet looking , rather then crisp and focused...that is why I was wondering if it were the metallic flake and if the same could\would occur on a car that had a single color paint.

The finish is so smooth that I guess I had it wrong on what I thought orange peel was. Funny in that this 911 in this link has the same out of focus distortion I have, in the after pictures

Obviously I am being really picky since this car looks great, mine does as well but I found that there is a big difference from looking amazing from a few feet away versus inches away...but I guess that is being a perfectionist and realizing that it is hard to put a perfect finish on an imperfect paint job.

That's not really something that the average enthusiast can fix.... even for a pro, it's a difficult job. If it's a lease ot you're only going to keep it for 3-4 years, consider having the orange peel sanded out with 1500 grit. If you want fix the OP and keep it for the long run, paint work will be necessary.

Being a Porsche Boxster S owner myself, I would first guess orange peel. My car has it, as well as, my neighbors '99 Carrera. Did the haziness begin after a particular product was applied? Possibly, the lsp wax. Applying Zymol estate wax over FMJ made my car look dull but clean looking.

that pic is orange peel in that beautifully detailed 911 by 01blue. he was not paid to sand it down as most of us arent. very time consuming and professional job.

Thanks guys I appreciate the insight, I would have driven myself crazy trying to think of where I went wrong.

While on the topic of OP, does this happen because the factory uses automated paint sprayers vs. when you see a custom car shine it was done by a master painter who sands and paints to near perfection?

I saw a show on Discovery where a few custom car builders submitted cars to the show and the finish on the cars were unbelievable..
