What considerations must be taken with rock chips...

and claybarring/polishing/waxing? I will finally detail my 05 WRX paint. For the past year or so, it has just had every 10 day meticulous washings but never "detailed." I am kinda worried about the couple of rock chips and how they might be affected by the process of detailing the paint. Is there anything I should worry about or leave them as is and just start the process? Btw, I was referred over here by some of the guys at NASIOC.com. Also, this site is great! I though guys/gals into keeping up their cars appearance were a dime a dozen. :bigups

I don't concentrate too much on them, and just go right over them like they're not even there. That is, of course, if they aren't actively flaking. If they are, you would probably want to stay clear of them.

Another option is to take some time out one day, and repair them with touch up paint, wetsand paper, and polish.

They are not actively flaking. I do already have the touch up paint on hand so maybe I should repair them. But it kinda seems fruitless when a new rock chip appears in a few weeks. But anyways, I guess i can just go a ahead. But I think I will feel much more comfortable repairing them and and the doing the paint detail. I love for my car to look "clean" but I am sometimes too lazy to do stuff. I wish i had a garage. :( I think if i had one, I would be much more inclined to do all the stuff it takes to keep my car looking good. I already get compliments on how clean it is and I haven never even treated my paint. :) My interior still smells like "new" :chuckle: But I must admit not many people go in my car besides myself. :2thumbs:

make sure you prep the chip before touching it up. ie: clean them with prepsol or iso alchohol.

you want to remove any wax.

Consider having a clear bra installed. they are usually in 2 parts, sold seperate. A hood kit and a bumper kit. So you can protect the most vulnerable area.

Rock chips just don't bother me for some reason :nixweiss Though my WRX sure did get a lot of them.

IMO there are usually only two issues with the chips: rust and product residue.

If your chips are prone to rusting, I'd treat them with a rust converter like 3M's Rust Avenger (use a toothpick to put it in the chips). Even without touchup paint this works very well. The chips in the Jag's hood happened in August of '86 and they're still fine (no spreading, flaking, rusting).

Product residue can be minimized by using lots of lube when you clay and not letting product dry in the chips (buff it out while still wet). If you get polish residue in the chips clean it out with some Meg's #34 and a soft plush MF. Use LSPs that don't leave heavy residue.

Very late with that thank you's but her it is, Thanks guys. I will take all that you have provided into consideration. Btw, my car got egged early this morning... :bawling:

I am sure i got all the residue off... I was so lucky the egg didn't go inside my car. We were rolling down the freeway early this morning after I picked my bro up from the Airport and we were struck. We have no clue how it went down, but my bro had his window down and he got kinda splashed because the egg struck right below the side view mirror on the passenger side.
