I use a Canon 500D/T1i SLR camera with the stock lens. For the longest time I used Canon S5is and it took great photos. I'm a big Canon fan and while I never tried Nikon, SLR or point & shoot, I think Canon picture quality is way ahead of others.

Along those lines, I would suggest figure out a budget and go with what's within your budget. You can search online or reputable photo forums and find an SLR camera in good shape for pretty cheap.

Nikon D90. Great camera for those getting into more am-pro photography as it shared technology as some of the high end pro line

Canon 350D. If you get into cameras you will quickly see that big money can be spent in lenses. You really cant go wrong with Canon or Nikon products. Try not to buy a DSLR and just shoot in auto, defeats the purpose. Learn to really use the camera.

Nikon D90...formerly D80. You can get really good results with a point & shoot camera, though...worth keeping in mind if you don't want to invest a lot of time and energy, or if you're concerned about theft, damage, etc.

I hate to borrow this, but the adage, just as in detailing, totally applies: results are 10% product and 90% process. :D

Nikon D90...a very nice camera. Great ergonomics, quality feel(no plasticky feel like some peers)

We use an entry level DSLR - Sony A200. As others have said - it's all about using the camera right regardless of the camera you use.

First choice is my Canon Eos Rebel XS. After that, I use my Canon Elf 10 mgp point & shoot. Haven't posted Itouch pics yet...too grainey, but still pretty goodl.

I use a Nikon D5000. A good SLR for the price, however, if you want to keep your angle of view (meaning no crop factor) and have some conventional lenses, you would want to look into a full frame camera such as the Sony A900, Nikon D35, etc.
