What brand of PC?

I am in the market for a new PC and was wondering what brand I should look at? I have always used and liked Dell but if there is something that is better bang for the buck I would consider it. I even looked in MACs but most of the software I use can only be used on a PC, such as AutoCAD.

Didn't you know that "PC" is a reserved term on Autopia, and it does NOT have a keyboard or mouse!!!

:chuckle:

It's hard to beat Dell's price and service/warranty unless you're looking to "get under the hood" to do some PC building yourself where you could pick and choose your components.

Bob, if you're just doing word processing, spreadsheets, Autocad, etc. IMO it's easier to stick with a Dell/HP and just configure the PC to your liking from their website.

That's how I feel too. I have a friend that will build me one but it might be easier to just buy one with a warranty and stuff. This is the one I was looking at: http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsdt_400?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Intel Macs do BOTH Windows and the Mac OS. Can't beat that!

I stopped into an Apple Store this weekend and liked them but they seemed really pricey.

My first thought was 'This guy's a sponsor & doesn't know that PC stands for Porter Cable?' :)

I'm typing away on a Dell XPS notebook. I have had to call tech on it once, and guess what? Zero wait! When you buy certain systems, you get an 'express service code' - no sitting on hold for an hour. Not sure if they do it just on XPS or on other model lines, but worth whatever it costs.

This is my third Dell and I buy Dells for my staff (4 other Dells in here). I always see what's new / better/ etc. and always come back to Dell. Why? Best combination of hardware / software for the money w/o building a system from scratch. Cheapest? no. Best? no. But I think they're a good balance for what I do.

Dell for a $500-$600 desktop is a fine. Dell for a laptop is rolling the dice...total crap IMO (sorry kompressornsc, nothing personal).

If you need a $900 desktop (graphics, games, etc) then building one yourself is probaby the better way to go.

If you have to go OTC:

Dell, eMachines, Compaq/HP

I like the build it yourself route, personally. No proprietary garbage to deal with :D

IMO all the major brands suck rather equally. Look at Costco...they usually have decent systems from all the major manufacturers and great prices of course.

Dell is good for a goof-proof set-up, even though they use Intel processors. I much prefer AMD processors but you tend to pay a little more and can't always find one that will give you the same service as Dell gives. My brother has a computer business and does a lot of custom building but he still recommends Dell for those who just want a good PC and great follow-up service.

Ok, you win! :lol I am going to build my first PC. I was talking with my friend about building me one and I told him I want him to HELP me build it so I know what to do and he was all for it.

So, I am looking on NewEgg.com and there are a million computer cases. What is a good brand of case to look at? I am not buying one now, just trying to get everything picked out.

Thanks!

I would go by reviews or ratings simply because case quality varies so much by manufacturer. Lian Li seems to be touted as top of the line, but I think they're overpriced.

On another note, IIRC laptops are all made by the same manufacturer in China now, so a Dell, IBM, HP, Gateway all share similar manufacturing tolerances.

lol. It took me by suprise too. I thought my eyes were deciving me! :)

Bob, NewEgg ROCKS :bigups. They are the Autopia of PC parts. Great service.

Also, I'll put a vote in for Antec cases. Very solid, good power supplies, and reasonably priced. I LOVE the Antec Sonata case in Piano Black. Whisper quiet and great lines (for a computer case anyway).

Thanks! I have bought from New Egg before for parts that my friend installed and he buys everything from them.

I am looking at that case right now. What is the key for? Is it locking the CD drives?

the front of the case probably has a panel covering the cdrom/power button. this panel swings open and the key it to prevent people from turning on your computer. also, the side panel probably has a lock too so people can't open it.

if i were to choose a case, i'd go with Antec. Go with what looks good FOR YOU. I personally like plain cases! Make sure you read the reviews. I bought a case from New Egg that looked AWESOME but was poorly manufactured. I took a chance even though the reviews said it was bad. They refunded my money (FULLY), wavied restocking fee, and paid to ship it back. Newegg has the best C.S.

Post your parts here! We can double check it to make sure everything is compatible!

that's a great looking case! at it is cheap. BUT it doesn't have a power supply, which will run you at 50 dollars.
