What are the diffrences?

I currently use a Sears Orbital Buffer that has 2800 Random Orbits Per Minute, 10" Buffer/Polisher

Now whats the diffrence between that and say:



A Sears 6" 1/2Hp Polisher that has 1450 RPM and 1600RPM ?

I dont really get the whole OPM to RPM thing. Can someone help decipher this for me?
 
1st one is a random orbital and the second is a circular (rotarty) polisher. Normally the spindel is "5/8's, on this it is "1/2, you may have a tough time finding backing plates. Random orbitals occilate or jiggle so there is no real pattern which makes it safe because it's not in one spot long enough, a rotarty move in circles and is measure in how many rotations per minute (RPM)
 
A rotary is different since it can reach higher RPMs which give it more friction (ie heat) to break down polishes. It will be able to level the clearcoat because of this.



A random orbit is exactly that, random. It never stays in a single spot or at a high enough OPM to ever create substantial heat.



And then you have the DA polishers also.
