Wet sanding - Could I correct more than this?

Hi.

A friend of mine had a minor accident and asked me to correct his STI for free. The impact was quite bad and the door was bent.

I have a flex 3401. Knowing that the Subaru paint is soft, I proceeded with the following steps:

- wet sanding w/ 2000 paper

- purple wool and m105 without pressure and going fast

- orange pad and primed m105 with moderate pressure

- white pad and SIP

Somebody told me that he wasn't very impressed without even looking at the actual damage, just looking at the picture, that he could have done better with his rotary... Could I have done better than this without a PTG and knowing the Subaru paint?

Your friend asked you to take a shot at this mess while owning (and presumably being comfortable with) a rotary? Then tells somebody else what a poor job you did? Geez.

Judging from the picture, the impact appears to have been hard enough to throw off the spacing between the panels. It looks much better and I think you did a good job, especially since some of those gouges one the R hand side of the pic look deep. What were they expecting?

It's impossible to say if you could have done more by the pic alone, but if you finished down LSP ready with SIP/white then the paint is harder than you're giving it credit for. I've read that the paint on these 08+ wagons isn't as soft as the GD series.

I would of gotten some touch up paint before and LSP were applied wouldn't remove the scratches but might cover them up some. Either way thats an amazing improvement

Since you were wet sanding, you should have gotten some touch up paint. That far right scratch is showing primer. It may not have come out perfect, but much better than it is now. I'm not knocking you down cause you did a damm good job without paint. As far as your friend goes, tell him to go to a body shop the next time.

BTW a rotary with a wool pad might have done a slighly better job, but I don't think he could have taken all those deep RIDS out without paint.
