Weird defects in (under) the paint of brand new BME 740Li

Rasky's Auto Detailing
So I did this BMW last weekend and there were 4 panels with these weird marks on them that appeared to be "under" the paint, possibly in the E-coat/primer prior to painting. The were smooth (couldn't catch edge) and could only be seen under the overhead florescent lights. Using the Brinkmann or Fenix showed nothing (maybe a faint outline if you tried hard).

The hood, deck lid, and drivers door all hand the marks starting from an edge moving inwards about an inch or two, but the roof was most noticeable as it went almost all the way around the antenna/fin. To me some of them looked like outlines to where foam panel protectors would be on panels prior to assembly. Assuming the panels are stored similar to what you'd receive at the body shop, with foam guards and in a box.

Anyway here are the pics of the roof one where I could capture them. I mentioned them to the owner and asked if he'd like them pointed out as he'd likely never see them. He declined but I at least wanted him to know what they were in case he ever did notice them.

Cant say Ive seen that before Chad...

Neither have I actually. I did a friend of the owners 750i a little over a month ago and it didn't have these issues. It sort of reminded me of sanding scratches under the paint you occasionally see from poor body shop work too.

That's really odd.... almost looks as if some of the e-coat peeled away from the panel before the basecoat was sprayed, but I would think that would cause adhesion issues as well.

Were you able to see any sort of measurable difference with the PTG?

I'd bring this up to the dealer and have them document it and/or have them bring in a factory paint rep (PPG) to get their take on it. Or, maybe Ron can chime in......???

I'd hate for it to get worse. And would also hate for them to repair/refinish it because it will never be the same. Anther reason why it's vital to document these kinds of things with the new coating warranty being released. You miss this and there's a strong chance that Optimum could be paying to correct this under warranty due to some kind of delam accusations. Just saying....

Already "chimed in" a few days ago.

Nothing like I have ever seen in 40+ years working with the car companies, ports, assembly plants and dealerships.

Told him as you did, "don't touch", get BMW field engineer in on this one.

Grumpy

Didn't get any PTG readings Charlie, but the finish was smooth and level.

I left them alone, explained to the owner what I found and asked him if he'd like me to point them out given that they could only be seen in certain lighting and given the location he'd probably never even see them. He declined and said no sense in creating an eye sore he'd probably never have seen himself.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has run across something like this before. :)

I have a tiny little one about an inch long on my hood of my BRAND NEW 2013 Genesis Coupe 3.8. Its smooth to the touch also and I couldnt seem to get it out. Would like to know what it is...

Looks like a pull back line on a clear bra. I'm sure it's just a defect under the paint. Maybe a hair landed in it and they pulled it wet? Hard to say!

If this man hasn't seen it, call BMW ASAP!

worked in a production paint shop myself and don't recognize it. If it is from near the front of the car it could be hoist transfer damage. depending on the conveyor systems in the plant it would be hard to say. Looks like it may have been bumped during transfer from elpo/base or base/colour.

Are there foam protectors on the panels before they go into the conveyor? The marks on the trunk were in the same location on both sides. The one on the hood was very straight and about 5" long located on the back edge near the glass. The one on the drivers door was somewhat rectangular shaped and below the handle. All but the one on the roof could not be captured in pics. I'm confident the owner will never see any of them other than the roof ones I posted....even that one is pretty hard to see.

It really seems like some sort of an adhesive outline below the base coat....
