Website color schemes???

Ok, not being a graphics person, or one that studies color wheels, does someone have experience with color schemes that help make a site flow well- eye tracking and so on?

Looking for new color scheme on one of my sites.

The logo uses black with yellow and red.

I know that some people like white backgrounds while others have light blues or even black.

I want a "calming" effect, not "LOOK AT THIS OMG!" as if you were coming head to head with a train and had no way to turn back.

Any advice or thoughts on colors is appreciated.

In a communications class I took, the professor was discussing the most memorable colors to use in a Powerpoint presentation and I figured it would apply to a website too; however, she claimed that it was researched and proven that a dark blue background with yellow text was the easiest color combination to view and retain information from. The participants were polled after viewing multiple presentations and color schemes and it was determined to be the dark blue/yellow was the combo that people would remember the information the best from. Anyway, I know it's a different context, but I am sure it still applies in some way. Although, I didn't take this approach myself with my website, lol, and I'm not sure why I didn't.
