Wax vs Sealant

I am new to quality detailing and I know this might be a real basic question but can you guys tell me the difference between a wax and sealant? From my reading to this point I think I understand that a general process goes something like this:

Wash

Clay

strip old wax/sealants

corrections

wax

sealant

is this correct? A lot of the "kits" i have seen appear to include either wax OR sealant.. which makes me wonder if wax and sealants are used for the same thing.. this is what I want to clarify. Also if my understanding of the generic process is off at all please correct me!! Thanks

Your question is real hard to answer. There are many differences between different sealants and different waxes. Your process will differ everytime based on the need of your paint.

Sealant before wax.

Welcome to the forum.

Process: wash -> clay -> correct -> seal -> wax

Normally sealants last a lot longer than waxes.

IMO waxes like Pinnacle Souveran & P21s 100%,CMW, Natty's among others, look better on my dark colored cars than sealants.

apparently sealants will outlast wax

apparently wax looks better than sealant (deep wet look, disclaimer: eye of the beholder)

I am guessing sealants do a better job at protecting paint than wax

you can wax OVER the top of sealant to get the best of both worlds!

Yes and no. Like many other things, you cant apply a blanket statement to many different products.

But thats sums it up pretty nicely.

And as you already stated, you can use both and get the best of both worlds.

For myself personally however, I enjoy putting coats of LSP on my vehicle, so durability isnt the chief issue for me.

In its simplest definition, a wax is a natural product, while a sealant is a synthetic (man made) product. They both do the exact same thing, just as synthetic motor oil does the exact same thing as conventional motor oil. Which one is better is an ongoing debate over looks and longevity. To complicate things, not all sealants will outlast all waxes, and, not all waxes will look better than all sealants.
