Wax residue on black trim

Yes, I've already done a search, but I'd like a direct answer of what has really worked and lasted in removing wax residue from black trim. I managed to get Meguiar's Medallion Premium Paint Protection on the black textured plastic door handles on my new Dodge Ram. The product I tried first was 3M Adhsive, Tar and Wax Remover. I didn't work. This was followed by Simple Green. Then acrylic laquer thinner (very carefully applied). My final attempt was S100 Total Cycle Cleaner. It sort of worked with a lot of rubbing. Is there a quick fix that will remove the residue? When I got sloppy with my wax application using my new PC, I was sure that the 3M stuff would work. I learned a lesson. Peanut butter? Really?

I used a Product called SD 20 to remove some SMR and Souveran residue recently from the black window trim and bed rail protector. I tried Dawn, assorted QD's, and Mother's Back to Black before deciding to use the SD 20. It's a hevy duty cleaner usually used degreasing but a little on a cheap MF and a good rub took it off. I rinsed well afterward with a wet towel then dried.

Peanut butter has a nack for getting that kind of stuff off. Its really worth a try. I've always had great success with whatever dash protectant I'm using and a tooth brush. The problem is that there is polish stuck in the texture of the rubber or plastic that isn't coming out. The bristles on the tooth brush seem to get it out pretty well. I've heard of people using WD40 and getting good results there too. Almost all cases I've heard about involved using a brush. If you are trying to wipe it off then you can stop now. The problem is that it is in little grooves and pits in the handle. You need a brush or something that will draw it out.

When all else fails, try a white drafting eraser. It works great on textured trim, and won't leave you with a messy cleanup.

goo gone works good for me. i got some wax residue on my wipers and i just wiped them down with a few dabs and they looked perfectly black. give it a try.

Funny, someone on newcelica.org started a thread "Help, can't get the goo out".

Of course, one response, "Use goo gone!"

Tony,

I've always heard of people using toothbrushes to get rid of the wax buildup around emblems and in small crevices. Do they scratch the clear coat at all? I'm hesitant to try.

Justin,

The soft-bristle toothbrushes won't scratch. Take some very warm water with you when you are doing that. Dunk the toothbrush into it as you are removing the residue. It will help soften the residue so it's much easier to remove.

Tried this first and works wonders:up

The only way I could get the wax to not reappear after the next wash was to use meguiars #39.

97 M3 with the wide side moldings...which love wax

I called the folks at Mequiar's because the product on the textured black is a Mequiar's product. The tech suggested Mequiar's #39.

I tried the S100 Total Cycle Cleaner one more time using a toothbrush to apply the product. Most of the white is gone. ( I better watch where I put that stuff on my Harley.)

I plan to purchase some #39 in case I mess up again. I also plan to mask my door handles and other moldings that are black plastic the next time I wax using my PC.

Taping off mouldings and trim prior to buffing and waxing is a hell of a lot easier! :doh

I recently experience the same problem in my black rubbers and I solved this way:

I clean the rubber moldings using MOTHERS Tag & Bug remover with a ToothBrush. The wax goes away very easy.

Then, I put MOTHERS Back to Black to keep a nice look.

For me, its work PERFECTLY

I have had good success with back to black too. Also carguy had really good results with 3M adhesive remover.
