Wax: Paste VS. Liquid

I'm been looking around and havent gotten any real solid answers on this...

What do you all prefer, what is easier and better to work with, which has a better result? Liquid or Paste Wax?

Example i'm looking at is:

Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax Paste 11oz $20

Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax Liquid 18oz $13

I've heard the paste is better... but never hear a solid answer WHY. Why the price diffrence for the "Same" product? Why make 2 diffrent types of the "Same" product?

Thanks all!

I like pastes better because I usually find that I use less product over the course of a detail. Plus, they are less messy, and less likely to spill all over the place (this is more of a problem than one would expect). Also, in theory, pastes should last longer, as liquids are by nature made up of more solvents/whatnot, and less protectant content.

Plus, most of the best waxes come only in paste form (Trade Secret, FK1 Pink, Paste Souveran, etc). The best liquid wax out there (Liquid Souveran) is a few steps behind paste Souveran in looks (different formulation, markedly different price).

I use foam hand applicators to apply pastes. I use the PC or Polishin Pal to apply liquids, depending on the liquid's viscosity. A real thin liquid would not be applied with the PC because the large pad would soak up a lot of product, thus wasting it.

I prefer pastes over liquids.

gotcha... thanks all for the info.

i've never heard of the above mentioned pastes (Trade Secret, FK1 Pink, Paste Souveran, ect...)

i thought the new Meguiar's NXT Generation Tech Wax Paste was the way to go for a dark (black actually) car. but then i also heard that it's a bit oily and holds more pollen/dust to the car.

thoughts?

I apply paste via machine, just use the PC wrench (or a butter knife) to butter the pad just like a piece of bread. I almost never apply by hand (arthritic condition in my fingers).

Meg's NXT paste is the best OTC (over the counter, available in stores) paste wax, but for better ones, try ordering online. Autopia has a great selection on their site (www.autopia-carcare.com) They carry Souveran, among other quality waxes. FK1 Pink (looks 90% as good as Souveran, at 1/7th the price per ounce) can only be found at www.finishkareusa.com .

I've heard some nice things about mother's carnauba paste wax (non-cleaner version), though I've never used it myself.

integraologist: Paste wax will get you more applications per ounce than liquid. Your 16 ounces of liquid wax will be half empty after about 10 cars, but 10 applications will just begin to put a dent in a can of paste wax.

I have found NXT to be a PITA to apply correctly, therefore I like the liquid better. The paste tends to produce lots of dust, tough to remove and harden like cake if too much is applied. I am afraid if I try to apply the paste to my PC the same thing will happen if I put too much on the pad.

Anyone else get the same thing?

I used to prefer pastes, but now I prefer liquids. I find them easier to get a thin layer, and I don't like getting cross contamination (dirt) in my wax jar.

But it's not a "strong" preference. If all I had were pastes, I wouldn't throw them all away and go get liquids.

Paste is my gut choice, but just because a product goes on thicker or more easily, does not mean it is necessarily better or worse. In fact the thickness of paste wax is a good reason that liquid is wax is popular with machine application users. I think the liquid and paste waxes might be mainly equal in wax concentration/quality/reflectiveness and the rest, just in a different delivery mode. I still have my # 16 stash and my Mothers non cleaner paste, in the past these products have produced memorable results for me, so they still have a place in my collection.:xyxthumbs

I like both, but tend to use more liquids these days. Gonna have to use some of that Paste Glaz one of these days.

Megs NXT liquid =$32.00 CDN

Megs NXT Paste= $37.00 CDN

At these prices would you even be considering these product?

I've used both, side by side at a Meguiars Fun Day event and I can tell you that the shine, look, feel is the same after you are done. I had more trouble with the paste as the applicator pad didn't glide as smoothly, put on too much product as it was harder to redistribute once you got too much on (not impossible, just harder than liquid) and because of this I got some dusting which I never get with liquid. Talking to Meguiars, they sell paste because some people like it but there's no difference in products from a shine or durability point of view. Most professionals use liquid polishes and wax

I recently applied NXT paste with the PC on an Explorer detail I did, and it was the fastest wax job I've ever done. Worked like a champ. I love the paste.

how did you go about putting the Paste wax on the PC Pad?

and i read that using the supplied applicator pad is better to use then the PC for wax... never found out why though.

btw so far i've found:

Trade Secret - 8oz - $36.95

Pinnacle Souveran Wax -TBA- $69.00

FK1 Pink Wax - 1lb (16oz) - $15.73

Meguiar’s NXT Generation Tech Wax Paste - 11oz - $18

Any other top of the line waxes i should be looking into? Thanks again all!
