Waterspots WTFFFFFFF

My car seems to have trouble with water. Earlier in the summer it got some water drips on it while parked under a tree, and it etched them in pretty badly on the horizontal surfaces. It had about 5 coats of opti-seal over poli-seal on it when this happened. So I polished it all out again, and this time used 476s over poli-seal. I washed the car yesterday (about a week after 476s application) and dried it up quick. Parked it where there were no trees. It didnt rain, but there was some dew on the car this morning. I thought nothing of it and then in the afternoon I notice my hood is all covered in waterspots, and they do not wipe off with QD. *** is the problem? shouldnt non tap water not be able to etch the clear coat through a good coat of 476s? what is even the point of waxing if friggin water can wreck your finish right through it? I am getting sick of caring about my cars finish when it just goes to **** in one day. :hmph: :hmph:

any explainations and suggestions for me? :wall

this is a 95 bmw btw. dark blue color paint.

Are you sure you completely removed the old water spots? Not trying to be a confrontational but it's possible that's what you're seeing if it's so soon after you polished.

Also, tap water can be pretty harsh .. I'm not a chemist but I assume there could be chlorine and/or flouride added, iron and other minerals, etc.

Water spots are a big pain, my wife's van sat out on the dealers lot for 6 months before we bought it. I've polished it twice and they're not as noticable, but under some lighting, you see them clearly. I know I could hit it with the wool and compound if I wanted it "perfect" but I'm more concerned with keeping the clear as thick as I can.

Yeah I am sure I removed them because the old ones were really big in shape, like most of them were the size of 3 quarters put together. These ones now are small like dimes. I guesss I will see if I can just get them off with poli-seal with a white or orange pad..

I just went through the same damn problem as you're describing. I thought I had them all (this was on a new car from the dealer too) but under some lighting, you can clearly see them. Went over the spots with a yellow pad and #83 and they went away. Mind you I used a slower speed...like 2 but moved the PC over a larger surface area and just polished till the 83 broke down. I know people are gonna freak about it....well a few already have commented about the speed. My water marks are gone....the paint looks brand new.

I'd say, try the 83 and see if it will take it off. You can try it at the recommended setting of 5 or 6 on the PC to see if it works for you but for me, the polish dried up way too quickly for it to be effective.

Usually if there are waterspots with something strong like Collinite 476S, it just washes right off after each wash. It doesn't really etch in.

Hmm OK I hope you are right. I will try washing the car tomorrow. I thought if QD doesnt take them off that they are etched in, but maybe some soap will help. car could use a little wash too, it was just on the track yesterday!

If that doesnt work, I guess i'll hit it with the polish again and then put 50 layers of 476s on it.

OK I washed it up good, and no change at all in the waterspots. The water beeds up like crazy and sheets off of the hood, but somehow that is not good enough protection from getting water spotted from dew.

So, be careful of water guys.

You have no idea! Water is evil! Did you know water was responsible for most, if not all floods? AND TERRORISTS drink water...how good can water really be?

213783647 reasons why water is the shittiest thing on this planet, besides shit.

MODS, I dont know what the policy is on hotlinking, but this is just a funny list...check it out ;)

Ive had very good luck with 476s resisting water spots...my winter protection is a couple layers of 105 followed by a couple layers of 476s. Ive had good luck with it so far.

I'm going to repolish and then put about 10 layers of 476s on. then some optiseal over that after a few washes. Maybe that will work.

Somewhere here I have read that white vinegar was the best to remove water spots . Haven´t try myself but is ease and cheap to try .
