Watermarks over SG

Finished detailing my ride 2 weeks ago. My LSP was 3x SG topped with S100. Ive followed the proper curing time before each layer of the SG and the S100. My problem is it rained last week and I got to wash my ride 2 days after. I was surprised that the watermarks werent removed at all. I thought that the SG would take care of that and now Im disappointed and P***ed off. Do you think I've done poorly on the SG application. If i remove the watermarks do I have to AIO and SG again? what would your preferred method in removing the watermarks? clay? cleaner wax? mild polish? thanks.

Can you feel the water marks on your paint? Is your paint etched from the water spots? I would try

QD

Clay

AIO

You could also try using a vinegar solution to remove the minerals that are on your paint. If that doesn't work then I would use a mild polish.

I don't think that you have done a bad job of appling the SG. My understanding of water spot damage is. Water has minerals in, when the water beads on your paint it acts like a magnifing glass and the sun will heat up the paint directly under the water beads. The water evaporates and leaves behind the minerals in the shape of the water beads. You want to get the minerals off of your vehicle as soon as possible. The higher the mineral content of your water the worse the water spots will look. Hopefully this has made sense to you.

If I have made any mistakes some one please chime in.

Removing etched water (below surface) spots from paint-

Methodology

â€Â¢These can be removed by using detailer's clay to remove any hardened surface deposits

â€Â¢Then using a machine polish, Iz einzett TM Metallic Polish or Iz einzett TM Paint Polish and a cutting (LC Orange or Yellow) foam pad (speed # 4) to level the surface

â€Â¢Work on a very small area at a time (2-foot x 2-foot) until the polish has run out

â€Â¢Repeat this process two or three times, as necessary

â€Â¢Reapply surface protection once spots have been removed.

thanks for the replies. I am familiar in the processes involved in removing the waterspots. what I'd like to verify is that SG will not be able to prevent it. I was under the impression that SG will prevent the waterspots from etching into the cc.

I find it hard to believe that "waterspots" got through 3 layers of SG and a topper of S100 in only 2 weeks. Are you sure that you are not noticing old spots that were there before your detail of 2 weeks ago?

that is what is baffling me hence the thread. I am sure that I detailed it properly and the conditions (lighting) when I saw the watermarks were the same when I inspected it after the detail.

Happened to me too. I just had AIO+UPPx2 a week ago, and it rained yesterday. I washed the car today and was frustrated, I had waterspots all over the horizontal panels! Wiped it with vinegar and it didn't touch it.:(

As Sullybob mentions, the big factor here is the content of the water (rain) that was on your car. About the only defense to prevent etching from acid rain or very hard water (from a lawn sprinkler in some areas) is to wash or use a QD as soon as possible.

I've seen bird crap etch into a finish in less than a day, and other times I've taken it off a car that has had it on there for weeks w/o a problem. It depends on the diet of the bird on any given day as to how potent the droppings are.

Not sure where you live and how bad the acid rain is there, but milky_08 had the same problem with AIO and UPPx2. He lives in Manila and the acid rain there is supposed to be pretty bad from what I've read from other members located in the PI.

It may help, or give you a little more time, if you top with a very durable wax like Meg's #16 or some Collinite.

No wax / sealant resists the effects of water spots caused by a chemical reaction. It will etch through to the base metal if left for long enough

Clean water spots (and bird excrement, as its also acidic) as soon as you notice them (QD and a micro fibre towel) will suually remove them from the protection.

Thanks Eliot Ness. :)

I've always had bird crap eat through my clear. Sad, but i can't help it. There was this one time i had to wetsand it out :D

I must say that #16 is excellent in preventing etching from our acid rain.
