Water Spotting with POXY????

My 2007 Passat was protected with Z2 initially and then I switched to DG105. In all that time I never had one water spot on the car. In May I polished with Speed and then added a coat of POXY the next morning. Over the past week we've had some heavy showers followed by full sun. For the first time in six years I now have a few water spots or etching--tried to remove them by hand with some ZAIO--it lessened them, but didn't take them out completely. Anyone else noticed this with POXY??

I've had all sorts of water spotting issues, but none with Poxy. If you had spotting all over the car, I think you should question choices of LSP, but a few spots here and there indicate something else is at play.

All I know is that where I'm at, nothing you can do will prevent spots, we have some seriously hard water. It's not so bad when it rains but the water spots are still there irregaurdless of what LSP I've used.

I'm certainly in the same situation with tap water here--very hard, but this is the first time I've had a water spotting issue from rain water even in the last 3 years since I moved to Western PA from NH. It is strange that it is only a few spots here and there rather than all over the horizontal surfaces.

Perhaps this is why I haven't seen this before using POXY since I was using DG105: From TOGWT's info on surface decontamination---"Protection - an acrylic polymer or polyethylene-acrylic (Klasse, Jeff Werkstatt or Duragloss #105 Total Performance Polish) are all acid-based so they are resistant to acidic pollutants (acid rain, bird excrement, and etc) there is no."

Is POXY acid-based?

What it SOUNDS like is that either those few areas weren't covered as well as the rest of the car, and failed to protect sooner, or it just started fading before the rain started.

Poxy is, I believe, more of a wax than a sealant, so I'm not sure if it's acid based or not, but I would think it isn't.

Well, fresh hardwater spots should disappear with some white vinegar. If that doesn't get rid of them easily, its something else. Any pics?

David, do you know what ammonium bifluride is?

It's the component that got the ArmorAll Quicksilver product pulled from the market, and it's in this product.

A quick search of that Armor All product resulted in bad reviews after it changed the formula and started ruining wheels. Not sure if it was good before the change though.

Same active ingredient in Meguiar's Wheel Brightener if I'm not mistaken.

It's a key component for etching glass, and also a calcium-seeker. Scary product, IMO. I keep some WB around but rarely use it.:fear:

I think the moral of the story with all chemicals is to use with professional caution, in a well ventilated space, and with proper body protection. Oh, and don't drink any.....:)

Being that is just a "version" of hydrofluric acid, wear safety glasses, chemical proof rubber gloves and don't breath the fumes.

So just washed the red Jetta, I got a few water spots on the Speed/Poxy side as well. They look like water spots but they are where bird poo was. MY Poxy/Speed was pretty much toast since last week, but still sort of miffed at myself for not getting the poo off fast enough. First etchings on the car...hoorays....ugh.

I feel your pain. It's really hard to be able to get the poo off fast enough (if your main work isn't detailing). I tend to fall into the "I have xxx LSP on there so that will buy me more time" category when I really shouldn't.
