Water spots, what to do?

So my car finally made it out of the garage (battery charged for 18 hours) and I got to work in late because of the little "photoshoot" in my driveway.

I love this Klasse Stuff, 7 days, AIOx2 SGx5. I'm going to snap some more pics in the sunset in my company parking lot

Wait, the wheels are not shiny!

haha

Very nice detail job considering the time spent on it. I had 5 hours not 5 days.

Keep those pics coming,

Jason

The reflection of the bricks is impressive, particularly on a silver car. What you're doing seems to be agreeing with the patient. :)

Wow wow wow! Isn't it hard after 7 days of detailing, and then driving it all the way to work? And then seeing some bird droppings?

Oh well, great job!

Very nice pics indeed! Great job Steve. However, lets not forget that Jason did his job in one day and I believe he did it outdoors as well. Laters.

After looking at that pic a couple of times, i hae to say that is the best looking silver i have ever seen. Very bright, yet soft, clear and wet. Not puttin' down jasons fine work on the beutiful BMW, especially for one day.:up

you'll also notice that the sun is directly behind me (magic morning light!) and shining directly on the house.

I used the curviest part of the car too.

but guys we preach technique and i just used what we preached

Having a garage and a car to work on for a week would be a dream. :)

Steve, lets have a detail show off. Next summer your place, I work on one half, you on the other, (you got enough cars in the driveway,) and at the end lets see whose the best! HAHA!

Jason

haha jason, no way! you just want to touch my car ;)

j/k Jason, I'll challenge you to a detail off. I'll detail my car and you do the other 4 in my driveway :D

would be cool if I could see your technique in person though

Howdy all, need some help with my wife's 05 Explorer. She often gets lawn sprinkler spray on the paint which, if not taken off immediately, leaves scaly water stains that i can't remove with washing, cleaner waxes or clay bar.

I only have an orbital buffer (terrycloth and microfiber pads) and a whole can of elbow grease...

Also after you tell me how to remove it, is there anything i can put on that will minimize the water spotting in the future?

Thanks!

For scaly water spots I always start with a product called "One Grand Special Touch". Specifically formulated for water spots. I've not seen many spots that it would not remove. (I've had my bottle for so long I can't even remember where I bought it... internet search should yield results.)

For very severe water spotting, you will need to polish. I use a PC with LC Orange pad and either M105 or M205 depending on how bad the water spots are.

I would recommend Blackfire Wet Diamond (2 coats) for protection. But no product will actually repel water spots. The goal would be to have her park away from the sprinklers!!! (Haha!):biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

You might could also try soaking the areas with a rag soaked in vinegar/water mixture. I've done this before to remove water spots. Follow up with a cleaner wax, or a dedicated polish and wax/sealant.

And as Bill said, don't park near the sprinklers if you can help it.

Removing Water (Spots) Marks

Detailer?s may occasionally come across vehicles which exhibit what appears to be one of the following conditions: Water Spots, Etching or a "rough to the touch" feel.

Water doesn?t leave marks or etch glass; it?s the minerals that it contains calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) the spots are actually traces of minerals in the pores of the glass. They need to be dissolved into a liquid and then rinsed off. Alternatively they can be caused by industrial pollution (i.e. acid rain, bird excrement or industrial fallout)

There are two categories of water mark (the so-called water spots)

Stage One Corrosion
[: defined as a surface with light to moderate corrosion damage to the paint surface]

Stage Two Corrosion
[: definition when the dirt/corrosion deposits are no longer on the surface but have started to break down the molecular structure, leaving an etched or white haze on the surface( a concave circular mark ) after the stain has been removed, with moderate to serious paint damage]

Use the least abrasive product first-

1. Use a paint surface cleaner (Z-PC Fusion Dual Action Paint Cleaner or Duragloss 501)
2. Try to dissolve the alkaline-based, surface/etched mineral water deposits try one or more of the following;
a) Use a 2:1 or stronger solution of distilled water/distilled white vinegar (Acetic acid)
b) Try a 2:1 solution of distilled water/Isopropyl Alcohol (adjust ratio as required)
c) Or equal parts distilled water/distilled white vinegar/Isopropyl alcohol.
3. Clean the effected surface with Klasse All-In-One or Zaino Z-PC Fusion Dual Action Paint Cleaner
4. Use detailing clay to remove any `hard' surface granules
5. Use a machine polish (Optimum Polish, Optimum Compound) and a cutting (LC White, Orange or Yellow) foam pad (speed # 4- 5.0) to level the paint surface
6. For Ceramiclear or other hard clear coats substitute Menzerna for machine polish; Super Intensive Polish / Nano Polish (105FF) or Final Finish Polish (106FA)
7. Use the least aggressive polish/foam pad first, if this doesn?t remove the problem step-up to a more aggressive polish / foam pad set-up
8. Menzerna Power Finish (PO203S) - (M) this is a one-step scratch remover polish is formulated for CeramiClear or other ?Hard? paints. It will remove 2500 grit, cut 3.0-gloss 3.5, is formulated as a quick way to polish out light flaws and amplify the paint?s gloss. Use a primed Orange (mid range, high density foam (60 PPI) medium abrasive cutting action LC CCS foam pad 1200 RPM
9. Wet-sand with 2000, 2500 or 3000 grit finishing paper

Thanks guys for the quick replies. Yes, the obvious answer is 'stop getting water on the car!' but, you know how wives can be...

I'm going to try cheap first, that being the vinegar solution. I did see 1 grand special on amazon for 16.99.

Also, here on the PAC site, they have a Blackfire kit of Clay, polish, and sealer and pads etc. for $99.99. Is that a good price? Finances are very tight at the moment, but looks like I need to get some bfwd.
