Water Spots Help - How Long & What Product??

How long does it generally take for a water spot to become a "tough" water spot?

Last Friday afternoon I washed my wheels (was going away for the weekend, and didn't want to leave the moderate brake dust). Tonight I was going over a couple places on my black car w/PB S&W and notice what I think are a few tough water spots on the hood. The S&W wouldn't do anything to them. Could I have etched in water spots after only 3 days? Car sat in the garage all weekend. Assuming they are some tough water spots, what should I use to get them out? Thanks!

I have had water spot etching after one or two days as well just from the rain around here while it sat outside. Pretty light stuff though for me, AIO by hand got rid of them.

I guess just use the general least abrasive and work your way up rule. I have had some good ones that AIO couldn't take out before and 106FF with a light polish pad got rid of them.

To me if they bake in the sun they are quite a bit worse.

How long it takes to etch in depends on how much (and what kind) of protection you have on the paint.

Yea, you probably will need some polish. like 99blackSE mentioned, least aggressive first!

Thanks, guys. I'm now starting to question whether they are water spots. The car did have some spots that I know were water spots, but they came right out. Would it make sense for 4 or 5 spots to be etched after only 3 days, while the other 25 were not etched?

As far as the protection is concerned, it's a new car- I just picked her up on Monday, 8/6. The dealer did the prep and did apply a sealant (which, as I understand, is relatively tough). Like I said, I'm starting to wonder whether these 4 or 5 spots (a couple are relatively small, and some are probably 1/4 inch or so in diameter) are, in fact, water spots. FWIW, the spots that have not come out are all concentrated in one area of the hood. Maybe I can try to post some pictures.

Any further thoughts on this?

I have never found a good water spot remover (acid based). I get them on my boat. I have to resort to a agressive polish to get them out.
